September 11th

I am asking all of us to take a moment and reflect on what occured two years ago. I'm also asking all of us to take a moment and pray for all the over 3000 victims and their families. I'm sure almost every greek organization lost someone in those horrific attacks.

Thanks.

At the beginning of class, I gave my students 10 minutes to write down their thoughts, impressions, and feelings about 9/11/01 and where they are now, two years later.

As always, my prayers are with the families and friends of 9-11 victims. I give thanks for my own loved ones who make my world worth living in.

Every year, I do a local history seminar for the local third-graders. Since this is the beginning of their study of history, I do my best to personalize it, and make it interesting.

In 2001, I was asked NOT to talk about September 11. Last year, I went against policy and talked about it anyhow. These kids have witnessed, via media over-kill, the most terrifying moment of American history - and I don't think they should forget it! My statement was basically, "Do you remember what you were doing on September 11, 2001? I'd like you to think about it, and maybe even write it down, because for the rest of your life, you will be asked, 'Where were you on 9/11?'"

Does anyone find that a troubling statement for a third-grader? As a counselor, I see no problems with it - but I admit that I'm in geriatrics. Anybody else have an opinion as to whether I should stop asking this or not? I do realize that this would probably be the last year I ask it, as it will soon be too late, but I am interested in your opinions.

Thumbs up

honeychile, it is idiotic for the School to say dont do that!

Important events are a fact of life:

Deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. JFK, Harvey Oswald. Landing on the moon, The Atomic Bomb on Japan, Elvis, Sept. 11., the 2 space shuttles that blew up.

While the dates may fade, the events do not ever fad!

Were You right, YES, and thank you for haveing the fortatude of going ahead!

That is History. It is tough to sweep under the rug!

I've noticed that we've all been posting a lot about 9-11, and I'm glad that we all remember those we lost and their familes left here. One thing I hope that we do is to remember these people throughout the year. We may not be posting about 9-11 year-round, but there are men and women overseas right now fighting for us because of what happened, and we should do our best to think of them.

There's a sign at a paint store in Valdosta that says, "Do something nice for someone with a deployed spouse today." These people have left their lives and families behind to fight for us whether we agree with the cause or not. We should all be grateful and do what we can to help families that are here alone, both of those lost on 9-11 and those overseas.

This post made me cry! It's amazing how many people forget that this is by no means over. My husband is in Iraq, and has been there since May 1st. I get to talk to him periodically, but won't be able to see him until most likely February. In between now and February, I'll give birth to our first child, whom he will not see until he is three months old. It's very hard for both of us, but he believes in the reason that he is there, and I find comfort in that.

I just want to ask everyone to hold your families a little tighter today, and remember them everyday. You never know if they'll be here tomorrow.
