Question Why Alpha Kappa Alpha?

Hello to the wondeful women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated. I need yhour help. I am a freshman taking my first African American Studies course. I chose the topic of Historical Black Greek Lettered Sororities as the topic for my final paper. I have began my research but it appears that I have reach a stump. I chose this topic assuming that is was a easy paper, however it has proven to be more difficult than I anticipated. I have vistied every organizations offical webpage ( AKA, DST, SGR, & ZPB) and I have gather lots of information. However I have formed an outline and I am stuck. I am afraid that I do not know that differences between each organization. I have confronted my professor and told him that I thought each organization was exactly alike. He however begged to differ. My problem is that I have not talked to anyone in these organizations because I do not know anyone. Perhaps it could be that I have never had an interest in a sorority that I am ignorant to these difference. My next question would be why can't a young lady form a bond with other sisters in her community while doing community service on her own. Why join a sorority to do this? From this question alone I have derive the notion that there must be something special and distinct anout each of these organizations to make a young woman interested? I wish to make a thorough, accurate, and informed analysis of each organization in my report. I hope that any member of your organization can be of help. I have posted similar messages on each board. You may contact me at DarlingNikki@greekchat.com Thank You Nicole Davis.

I think you should start your research by reading the "Divine Nine" by Lawrence Ross, "Our Kind of People" I don't know the authors name and "In Seach of Sisterhood".

Each sorority was founded for different reasons, therefore we are not all alike.

It sounds to me that you need to do a lot of research and understand the concept of joining a historically black sorority. Since you don't have any interest it will probably be hard for you to understand.

Yes, a young lady can do community service on her own and most Sorors will tell you that they were heavily involved in community service prior to joining a sorority. However, I highly doubt that the bond of sisterhood can be as strong as those in a sorority.

I strongly suggest that you research each organizations history and purpose first. Once you have the basic concept of sororities then it will help you to understand the reasons why we made the choice to join such prestigious organizations.

Good Luck on your research!!!
