Question Rush

I noticed that several of you were talking about rush. I have been waiting almost three years for AKA (I'm a junior) and I've found out that "something" happened to University of Pittsburgh's chapter. The point is that we have a city chapter. How will this work with a city chapter? I know that you may be thinking "Why doesn't she ask someone from the chapter?" Well there isn't anyone here at all that is an AKA on campus which is why I'm hoping that the city chapter will do something soon. Also how is it possible to get a letter of rec. from an AKA when there aren't any around? Will this requirement be waived?

Thanks for Any Advice,
goodies

I was wondering some of the same things. What exactly is a city chapter and how do you become a member? Is it an alternative to a grad. chapter. I am graduating soon and will not be attending law school for another two years, can I still join a grad chapter (or a city chapter)?

Hey ladies,

I am a sisterfriend, but I think I can shed some light on the city chapter issue. From personal experience I can tell you that most if not all city chapters are undergraduate based. Instead of the chapter accepting undergraduates from one school, the chapter accepts and is composed of ladies from several different schools around the city. If there is a city chapter affiliated with a particular college, that college will not also have a separate school-based chapter.

To pursue membership into a city chapter requires the same, if not more, effort as pursuing membership into a school-based chapter. You must still meet and become known to members. You must still support chapter activities and attend the informational/RUSH when it is held. It may be a little harder if there are no members on your campus, but you still must make the effort. The only real difference is that interested girls and members are from different schools around the city instead of just one school.

To answer some of the other questions in the posts, it is my understanding that you do not have to attend graduate school or be in graduate school to join a graduate chapter. I do believe that you have to be a college graduate though. Also, as far as recommendation letters, requirements vary from chapter to chapter, so check with your chapter of interest.

I hope that helped. I did not mean to overstep any boundaries if I did. Please correct any of the above information if it is incorrect. Thank you. Bye.

Much Love,

Optimistic1

Okay you guys, here is some clarification, and Optimistic1 you have some correct info:

A citywide chapter, or metropolitan chapter is, yes, persons who attend the county wide area can apply for chapter membership if they have all the qualifications. Those are listed on our website for undergraduates.

A city wide chapter has more work to do than a school based chapter because it has a much more far reaching affect on community services as required along with all the universities requirements. Some universities will not allow persons attending other schools to affiliate with a campus organization because of the insurance liability--such as if you were to goto another school's party and be involved where either you hurt someone or you were hurt yourself, then which school is liable? So some of my sorority sisters on one particular campus may stay away from trying to fight the school with their on campus status...

However, if your will is there and you are persistant, you can find out more about the chapter through the school because the chapter must be officially recognized by the school to maintain its on campus status as an official organization. So check with the school's student organization office or the greeklife office.

Secondly, a citywide chapter may be much like a "mini graduate chapter" but they have more fun, I think personally...

As far as a graduate chapter goes, you must be invited to join the organization. You must have a bachelor's awarding college degree and you must have a C+ GPA upon graduation OR a higher professional degree such as a Master's or Ph.D. (Yes, Sorors this is new!!!). And you will need serious funding to join a graduate chapter!!! So if you were unable to enter into a undergraduate chapter because of funds, it is a whole lot more in a graduate chapter...
