Houses?
Hello all:
Last weekend my beau and I were cooking breakfast at the local Ronald McDonald house. We were given a tour of the "mansion" during our visit and I could not help but notice what a wonderful sorority house it would make. It made me wonder if any chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has a sorority house. Do you all know of any BGLO sorority that has a house? I'm just curious.

Yes, there are chapters of our Sorority, as well as the other BGLO's chapters that have houses.

At my school (and only at my school, as far as I know), it is unlawful to have an official sorority house. It was explained to me by a sorority member that houses filled with women are considered "brothels" (I kid you not.). But of course anyone can buy a house and live in it, but to my understanding it wouldn't be recognized officially by the school. Also, at my school, males are allowed to have official fraternity houses.

Slvrngold: That is amazing! May I ask what school you attend?
I know that across the tracks at Florida State they have fraternity and sororoity houses, most of them are on one street. But at my HBCU, only the fraternities have houses. I thought that was interesting.

University of Tennessee, and my cousin attends Middle Tennessee State University and she says that they have the same policy where she is. Maybe it's a Tennessee thing???

No NPHC organizations at Florida State have houses. Only PHC and IFC organizations.

In some (could be many) states there are archaic laws on the books that state that if more than a specified # of women (more than 4 or 5, I think) are named on a mortage, lease, or rental agreement for a home, the house is consider a brothel.
It is not limited to only sororities or college campuses, but all homes owned in such states.
A good question would be: What, if anything are people willing to do about these laws?

In my college's case...I'm not sure about other states...women are allowed to stay in the same house. However, a house full of women will never be recognized as an official sorority house. I was told this by a member of a sorority. She stated that several sorority members could go on their own to buy a house, have meetings, parties, or whatever. But it would never be officially recognized by the University.

I may need to clarify.
These houses I mentioned previously are used to handle sorority or fraternity business. Members of the organizations do not stay there on a daily basis.

I may need to clarify also. When I stated that fraternity and sorority houses existed at Florida State, I was not referring to BGLO houses. Also, AKAD'91, I know that the chapter in Tampa has a "house" but my question was referring to houses that were actually occupied only by members of the sorority. I know that my experiences with BGLO's are limited to what I have seen on my campus so I was curious if any BGLO sororities have actual, recognized sorority houses.
That is pretty disheartening, regarding the laws in some states. I had no idea such a thing existed.
