Paying for friends
We're probablly all aware of the sterotype that some people have that greeks pay for their friends. Most deny that charge as BS but let me put a new spin on it. Maybe some one is a complete social retard. He or she could be a good candidate for pledgeship in all the other catergories, smart, fun to be around, etc. Okay so fun to be around wouldn't be social retard but maybe he always says the wrong thing or whatever, you know we all know people like that. Maybe joing a GLO would be really good for that person to learn how to make deep connections with people and they could turn into a great friend, at least for their brothers and sisters. Nobody knows everything. Some people don't know how to make friends. We're suposed to be bettering our members, and I think improved social interaction is one of our best assests. So maybe some people need to pay for their friends, so they can friends. Everybody needs friends.

Billy,
Whether you join a GLO, Spanish Club or Student Gov't, being able to network skillfully with other people will always serve you well.
'Nuff said.

although your statement is true about the whole improved social interactions... BUT that doesn't mean that they are paying for their friends anymore than the people who join who already make friends more easily we pay money to DO things and for insurance and rush decorations... NOT for the privlege of hanging out with each other.

I agree. I'm not going to vote a girl in because she's willing to pay for dues. I'm voting her in because I like her. If she figures out how to connect better while she's in, then great. Otherwise, I still like her.

And keep in mind that all organizations cost money. Most schools charge a student activity fee, and that's where the Spanish Club and student government get their funds. GLOs have separate dues because the university doesn't fund us. It may seem like Spanish Club and student government are free, but they're not. They just show up on the same bill as tuition. It's an illusion.

I never looked at it as paying for friends, cuz I can make friends wherever i am at, im a very social person..The way i always hve looked at paying "dues" is that it keeps the frat/sorrority.going.. Mixers, parties..etc..i understand the whole paying for friends..if you are in my frat and i dont like..you could pay 2grand a semester and i still wont be around you if i dont like you as a person?
Is that how most are..or am I way off track.

yeah see thats so how my mom saw it well kind of she thought that it was just a totally waste of my money that could be saved or used twards something else but really I dont know its not about the money. If it didnt cost money well that would be great lol but its more about the long lasting lifetime friendships the scholarship and the community service thats one of my favorite parts Im big on that

I'm not saying that we pay for priveledge of hanging out with us , I'm just saying that one of many good things about greek life is that we can help akward people interact and maybe otherwise they would go through life friendless.

Billy, that is usually how small minded people think or those that were never in a Greek Org.
I did not pay for my Brothers, I started the whole thing!
We had minamul dues and house rent! We did not have a house our first Sem. Did the second! Each of us paid a little out of our own pockets to do things that were not charged to the Chapter, just the thing to do!
We were fighting to stay alive on campus with 5 other National Chapters.
To this day, 38 years later, I have the Brothers not only at My Chapter but ones that I have met all over the Country!
I wasnt a LXA for 2 years I still am and we get together often and let alone meeting all of the peeps on GC who I have become freinds with!
Ex: One of My Guys is moving to Balt. to work! I passed it along to the LXA in Md area! If I did not know him or some of the Brothers there, i could not try to get him hooked up! He wont be alone in a new City and Area!
Buy freindship My Butt!

We had a joke in our chapter that since our dues were $115 per semester, each sister cost $2.50 and was well worth it.
I've seen people enter college socially awkward and insecure. When they pledged, they became more secure and blossomed socially. That's the good thing about greeklife. It gives everyone an opportunity to develop into a complete and well rounded person.

Ah cream, so true!
Many of the peeps that come to PSU are from small towns.
Have one Sunday meeting out fit and dont know how to dress past Jeans and T-Shirt!
The fact is, that being in a Greek Org. does tend to polish ones skills on how to dress, dance, eat, and learn how to run an Org.
You also learn how to to interact with Men/Women, play in sports, school Government, study habits, etc! When you Graduate, then you are really ready for the Real wold where you have to look nice, be nice and feel sharp!
I had this ass as a roommate in the dorm once who had a fan! He was smelly and it was like 111 degrees at 2:00 AM. I took showers to cool down cause this ass would not turn it on osalating!

Someone used to have as their sig line: "If I paid for my sisters, I didn't pay enough!" (paraphrased). I think that sums it up nicely!

In response to, "You pay for your friends," one of my sisters said, "Yeah, we are like Costco. we pay for bulk."

When it comes to the whole 'paying for friends' thing, it's a load of crap. The relationships we make when in a GLO go beyond just friendship: they are sisterhood and brotherhood. There are good times and bad times, and sometimes you think that you couldn't have paid enough for the experiences you share with these people and sometimes you think you'd like to have your money back. However, we all know that in the end, these people are more than just friends - they are siblings in spirit. Like blood siblings, sometimes you love them and sometimes you don't love them so much. But you know that they are your siblings and they shall be there for you. One thing that GLO siblings have over blood siblings is that we CHOSE to be part of each other's family.
P.S. Apologies if my writing is a bit off and I'm going off on a tangent. I was in a car accident yesterday. Go Las Vegas drivers... *sarcasm*
