It makes me so sad to see that many badges being auctioned off--and all at the same time! The one with the emeralds is pretty darned new. Surely the owner didn't take her sisterhood for granted to the point of selling her badge for what she can get?
I know some of these are from estate sales, families who didn't know what to do with it and don't know the significance it holds for members...but gosh darn it! No where in the creed of ANY GLO does it mention "By the way, these words apply only to collegiates," as the many happy and active alumnae can attest to! I wish there were something to be done. I guess I take comfort in the sisters who go about buying the badges to save them from collectors, but I wish the problem could be stopped at its source and these precious objects wouldn't come up for sale to the highest bidder.
Once I join a GLO, I will leave it in my WILL that my badge be returned to the HQ's of whichever org I join!
I was shocked at how many badges I found! Especiall ones with the full name engraved on them. I don't think it would be that hard for the person who is selling them to just send them to headquarters!
You know, one of the fellas selling those badges specifically says in his description, "No, I will not send my badges to your National Headquarters, so don't ask."
GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! As if I wasn't mad enough with my dryer not working.....
As much as it bums me out that our badges are selling on ebay for absurd prices, I really don't place any blame on the people selling them. For whatever reason, they got their hands on a badge that has lately been going for $400. I certainly wouldn't give away $400 to a perfect stranger...
Honestly, the badges never should have gotten into their hands in the first place. It's a rather unrealistic expectation to expect a stranger to give away something that has been selling for $400. It is, however, more than reasonable to expect that sisters should not let their badge out of fraternity. Think about it -- do you have a will, or any written document, stating where your badge should go if you suddenly passed away?
The non-Phi Mus who obtain our badges aren't responsible for returning them to the national office. We are responsible for making sure they never leave.
