The character Shelby in Steel Magnolias was based on the life of Susan Harling. Susan was a member of Kappa Iota chapter at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisana.

I am SO Shelby/Susan reincarnated. Here is why:
I live in Louisiana
I am a Phi Mu
My wedding was pink and pink (blush and bashful)
I married a KA (which I am convinced she did because of the civil war outfits in the movie)
I am diabetic (which is not fun but definitely ironic)
Hopefully the rest doesn't come true...

Yes, the man she married was a KA. My best friend/roommate was a Phi Mu at Northwestern LA and she transferred to Ole Miss about halfway through school. I met a few Phi Mu's from down there and theym were good girls.

Please forgive me for crashing, but I'm watching Steel Magnolias right now. The funeral scene is just over, and I think Claree is wearing a Phi Mu pin on her lapel! Has my imagination run wild, or is she wearing the quadrafoil?

STEEL MAGNOLIAS!
Shelby (Julia Roberts) played Susan Harlin and her son, in the movie, Jack, actually attends Northwestern State in Louisiana where she was a Phi Mu. I am a Phi Mu @ NSU and really good friends with her son, Robert. He has come to our meetings and shown us pictures of the real her! it's awesome! any other questions.....just reply! LIOB!

Steel Magnolias - Phi Mu Find
Hey Girls - My chapter is doing a "Phi Mu Find" for one of our Inspiration week days. What we are doing is watching Steel Magnolias, and trying to find all the things we can that pertain to Phi Mu.. and whoever finds the most WINS! Well, I couldn't really find that many phi mu things while I was watching the movie - so I was hoping that some of you girls out there would know of some.. and be able to tell me!

About how old is Robert?
My mother always uses the line (and I'm paraphrasing) "Will that baby know what his mother went through for him and how much she loved him?" on me, as I have been told that having children may be dangerous to my health (I miscarried while I was married).
Does Robert realize?

This one is kinda obvious (I think) but when Shelby's mom is helping her get dressed for her wedding, she pins something on her and behind them (kinda fuzzy) is a composite and some other Phi Mu related items, carnations etc. I had to rewind it a few times to make sure that what i was seeing was Phi Mu related..but its there 
There are more but i havent seen the movie in a while.. goodluck!

On Lifetime
Right now it's 9:22pm eastern time (HAPPY Easter EVENING!) in FL and they're showing Steel Magnolias on Lifetime and I've been dying to see it so I can see all the things you are talking about but I missed most of the movie  !
