What are you using now? 2000 is a good operating system, but designed as a replacement for Windows NT. Windows XP Pro is designed as a replacement for 2000.

If you are using windows 98 or ME, I would go for Windows XP Home, which is designed as a replacement for those two...same features as XP Pro without a as good networking package

Using Windows 98 right now. I've been thinking of upgrading for the longest time. I'm prob. going to leap and move toward Window XP now that you mention it. Thanks.

I agree with Docet. I use XP Home on my computer. It hasn't given me too many problems. Buy XP!

Don't buy XP Home if you are ever in a situation where you want to use the computer to log onto a server. I have XP Home on my laptop and if I have it at work and want to transfer info to the server I have to use PC Anywhere. It is a complete pain in the a$$.

XP Home = suxors.

No, seriously, it blows for networking, among other things. It has huge issues finding drivers too.

XP Home isn't that bad for networking, i've been using it for all my uses fine...changes can be made on the network itself pretty easily to allow XP Home to be used.

Also, you shouldn't have to use the operating system to find drivers - just keep all your CD's or look for them online yourself, they are extremely easy to find.

I'm talking professional networks, educational networks, etc. Like lauradav said, it doesn't play nicely with servers.

XPHome didn't find a driver for my CD-RW drive - that Phillips no longer supports. I would definitely go with XP Pro as it is the most versatile, although I wouldn't buy it.

I'm going to hijack a bit here...

I'm going to be connecting to a wireless network in our house that my fiance and my roommate are both on. (Yes, we are all geeks)

what is the best OS for wireless networking? Right now I have ME (came on the computer) but I HATE IT. I think FH has 2000 and roomie has XP or NT

For a personal home network, like Wifi, which I use, XP Home works fine.

And Kath: Are you sure that XP Pro would have the driver????? Even if Phillips no longer supports it you should still be able to find the driver online or you should of just kept the original driver on CD: omg, how easy would that of been!!!??

I never got a CD - that was the problem. I got no CDs of anything with my computer - no drivers, no OS, just the crappy
Compaq CD.

And yes, it works just fine with XP Pro, both the legal and illegal versions.

It's sad that you have to clarify which version you have....

I have both - actually my legal one is now illegal because the school let the liscence lapse with M$, but whatever.

If you want to stay with Winblows, I agree, go for XP.

I have an XP box and an NT server in my home office, and they seem to play reasonably well together... I've never had a serious problem (knock on wood).

One of these days I'll get around to installing Linux.
