Question for the Advisers out there

Have you attended or hosted an event for JUST the advisers ?

I'm a chapter adviser and I am thinking about hosting a small gathering for just the advisers (or maybe the advisers and their significant others), over the summer. But I'm terrible at creative ideas. I think, if I invite only advisers, I would have a group of about 10-12 people. I'm thinking a late Sat. afternoon.

Does anyone have a theme ideas ? I think it will be a time to just chat among ourselves, and also talk about ways to improve next year. And, I see this as "rushing" the advisers (without blatently coming out and saying PLEASE DON'T QUIT on ME !!).

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

i think that is a great idea!! my guess is that you probably don't get a chance to just chat about things other than the sorority! if you can relax with one another, than when it comes time to discuss business, it will be easier!

i think a bbq would be fun! i am not a big theme person. if you wanted, you could probably get them little gifts (some flowers, etc) to thank them for their help!

This was a common practice among the advisers for my chapter when I was a collegiate. They would get together for dinner once a month just for fun.

Have a BBQ...and keep them advising! The chapter will appreciate it!

You betcha! Keep it casual and keep it fun...it's good to have some time together and presumably all of your advisers are also your sisters--who doesn't love a good excuse to have some grown-up time with your sisters! Casual get-togethers are a great way to show your advisers how much you appreciate all they do for you and the chapter.

Smile We are meeting this weekend

Actually, this question is very timely because all of the advisors for the Gamma Phi Beta chapter at UGA are getting together this coming Sunday afternoon at the chapter advisor's home. (I'm the Standards advisor.) Among other things, we're going to re-cap the last year and work on recruitment which is coming up here very soon! Our chapter advisor is a wonderful person and she's providing all the goodies to eat and has even opened her home up to everyone's kids. I have a babysitter though.

This sounds like a great idea to me! I wish that we had something like this where all of the advisors come together for something casual.

I liked the BBQ idea.

I am in the process of organizing a luncheon for the advisors here. I picked up some really cute stuff for them at Conevention last week. When we meet, each one will get an AXiD tote, with a few goodies inside, plus a copy of their manual, with contact numbers for their collegiate VP's and the people at HQ that they may need to deal with. I will feed them a nice lunch (that MR. Tcsparky will have a leading role in preparing), go over each position, and give them info on the chapter. It will be our first chance to get together and just talk advisor stuff, for them to ask questions, and for us to get to know each other. We won't have a theme for the luncheon, but it will be relaxing for us to jsut be together. At the last Alumnae meeting I felt that we were talking so much about chapter stuff that the others felt shut out of our conversation.

Our Province includes 3 Georgia chapters. We will be meeting the end of the month. Luckily, it's only about 25 minutes away....not really that far, just a lot of traffic trying to get through the middle city!

advisers = alumnae

The advisers of our collegiate chapters are alumnae. Almost all of them are alumnae members of the GLO, although this is not an offical requirement.

Anyway, I did have my "event". We met on a late Sat. afternoon. We had a little ice-breaker exercise (answered questions about ourselves, like what's your favorite collegiate memory, what's currently in your CD/tape player, what was your nickname, and then discussed the answers with the whole group), and we also had a craft project (painted wood frames and glued on sorority letters). We also had some simple foods, like fresh fruit salad, broccoli salad, pretzels, and hot appetizers like chicken poppers. For those that cared to stay longer, we adjourned to the outdoor swimming pool to relax in the setting sun.

I didn't have the greatest turnout, but those that attended had fun. It was nice to get together, to get to know each other better, without the chaos, stress, etc. of having collegiate members (no offense to any... but when advisers are with you, our attention automatically switches to your concerns and problems, and it was nice to gather without having our attention diverted.)
