Post City Chapter

I am interested in joining an undergraduate Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The university I attend doesn't have a chapter, but I would be able to join city-wide chapter. Here is my problem, the chapter is quite small, and only one member attends my university. The chapter also doesn't have many events open to the public. I was wondering if anyone had any advice to give me as to how to meet more members. I am "qualified" as far as GPA and community service is concerned, but I was told that members will only vote for someone if they KNOW the person; that the basic requirements won't suffice if the members don't know you. Thanks in advance to any help you all can give.

You should simply contact the President of that chapter and ask her the questions that you have posted here. Let her know that you are really interested in joining the organization. It may be beneficial to you to give her examples of some programs or what have you that you want to see implemented. This way you can show your interest and dedication to the organization even before you are a full-fledged memeber. You will definietly score some cool points.

You mentioned that one member attends your university. Do you know her, or know someone who does that could introduce you to her? You mentioned that you are "qualified" as far as GPA and community service. Make sure that you know what the chapter requires because each chapter may set a higher GPA than what nationals requires. Also, keep in mind to be "qualified" requires more than the required GPA and community service.

When voting for someone, there are several things we must take into consideration. Yes, knowing a candidate does help with the evaluation process, but there were people I knew that I didn't give my full support to when I voted and vice versa. When selecting members for my beloved sorority, I wanted only the best for her. That meant having to put my personal feelings aside and not voting based on friendship or dislike.

My advice to you is to remain focused on your goal and have confidence in yourself. If you meet the requirements, that is wonderful. If they believe you will be an asset, then that is where your "points" will come from. Take care and good luck.

Hi! I am curious as to what school Humblebumblebee attends. I believe we are in the same boat. I transferred to a school and was told there was no chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority on campus. After further investigation (I refused to give up), I literally bumped into a delightful young lady who happened to be a member of AKA and she told me that there was indeed a chapter on campus. Problem is, my chance "meeting" with her occurred on the last day of the Spring semester so I have to wait until the fall to have the opportunity to actually see her again. She did take my name and E-mail address but I fear I was being such a fumbling idiot when I wrote the info down that I could have mispelled something. ( I was just so excited to have found out that there actually was a chapter after all) Anyway, I'm hoping the chapter has events this summer so that I may meet some of the other members. *sigh* I guess I will use the summer break to find as much info as possible on the organization. Good luck to you!

One of a kind: Email me, I would gladly let you know what school I attend.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my post. In answer to your questions:
1)No, I don't know her (the member) personally. I attend a HUGE school, and I only recently learned of her involvement with the sorority by a stroke of luck, and a blessing in the form of a sisterfirend.
2)I don't know anyone she knows (at least that I am aware of; she is a senior while I am a sophomore), and I am not sure how to find any common aquaintances without being "indiscreet".

I would also like to know if you consider e-mailing her indiscreet?
Thanks again for all the help.
