Question IRC - Who remembers this???

Ok, y'all. I remember, when I was in college, at first there was no Windows and there was no internet. But we still would chat and email. We emailed by VAX accounts. But to chat, we used the IRC - Instant Relay Chat. It was in DOS. Ooh, yall!! I can remember being up LAAAATE at night on the IRC. I used to go to #Black and #Blaklife the most (# means Channel).

Was anyone on IRC? It was around 93 and 94. It was some cool peeps on there!!!

wow...

Wow! IRC...now that realllly takes me back...

That was back when everybody and their granny didn't own a home computer and internet access and you had to access it at school....

That was back when the chats were actually entertaining and stimulating at the same time...not a bunch of trash like it is now...

Now that I think about it, people like me who have been around on the 'net for years has really seen the net and the WWW evolve from a far-reaching wish to an everyday necessity...

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

oh my goodness, that is how I got hooked to the whole chatting thing. I remeber when IRC first started and the different chat rooms #black, #blackhouse, #Blaklife.

I met so many Sorors and good friends, that I still talk to today. I remember #blackhouse had a reunion in DC in August of 1998 and I came out to see folks, and fell in love with DC and decided to move to DC. I got a job because of the folks I met on IRC, dated a few folks on IRC . I still use the same username

talk about memory lane.

Question

I have no idea what y'all are talking about. I don't remember any of this and I think I'm pretty close in age to most of you who have posted. I can vaguely recall not having the internet and I know I used something to communicate before then, but I don't remember what it was. Maybe it was IRC? What does that stand for? I'm going to have to do some research and come back to this one...

I remember Pine. We used that when I first started college back in '99. I've never heard of IRC though.

Ya'll missed out on some good times with IRC.
Just imagine GC as Instant Relay Chat and each forum is a channel and every time you post a topic, your "chatting". You can jump form channel to channel and you can PM anyone.
It'll be like IM but everyone can see what you wrote/said, unless your PMing someone.
I hope I did IRC justice.....how did I do Ideal?

Don't worry, I don't know what the heck they're talking about neither.

Me neither I do remember in my early chat days being on WBS.net. Is that the same thing as IRC?

#blaklife was on Dalnet, right? Well, a few months ago, Dalnet was the victim of a particularly vicious denial of service attack, and the network was taken out of commission for awhile. I think it's back up now, but if it isn't, I'm sure you can do a google search for #blaklife and see if there's a recently updated web page for it.

If you need IRC clients, go to http://www.mirc.co.uk for Windows, or to http://www.snak.com for Macintosh.
