Back down memory lane

Do you all remember having a favorite song as a child and you would sing it with all your heart but you didn't know anything about what the song actually meant and you had the words all wrong.

For me it was Superwoman by Vanessa Williams and Whip Appeal by Babyface.

I would sing these songs like I felt everything Vanessa Williams and Babyface were singing about. Truth be told I didn't know what was going on.

LMAO, Good topic. . . my SONG was CONGRATULATIONS by Vesta Williams and Superwoman was one too. I was in 8th/9th grade at the time.

I used to sing CONGRATULATIONS like I had wrote it, experienced it, took pictures of it and e'erythang.

I used to sing As We Lay by Shirley Murdoch and Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye. I was a young buc when those songs came out and I didn't know what the lyrics meant. Well I know NOW.

My song was WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO, GOT TO DO WITH IT...

I had no CLUE as to what she was talking about, but something about her voice or her emotion or something told me is was the TRUTH.

Plus, I used to sing "What's love? But a shocking hand in motion." (read: second-hand emotion) Yes, I was very deep at a young age, lol.

lol

mine was "Part-time Lover" by Stevie.

my rendition was "part-time mother" which makes sense paired with "call up ring once, hang up the phone to let her know u made it home so she won't beat you"

Vanessa Williams made a "Superwoman" song too? I remember Karyn White's song in the late 80's. Is that it?

I didn't realize Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" was about her and an unborn child. I thought it was about her keeping her man.

Rick James' "Mary Jane". I thought it was about a female.

The Brother's Johnson- "Strawberry Letter 23" I think that song was about doing Mary Jane. LOL Plus I didn't know what they were saying.

Well.....

I don't know about any "hidden" messages and my answer may be totally off the topic, but my FAVORITE song when I was younger was "Let's Hear it for the Boy" by Deneice Williams!!! I still love the song!!!

Girl, I was just about to post that. My parents used to hate for me and my sisters to sing that song. We didn't understand what the big deal was, so we would sing our little hearts out anyway.

*sidebar* This is cracking me up because it reminds me of the phase in my life where I went around calling everyone a "reefer addict". LMAO. It was a line in some popular movie (maybe Cooley High?) and all I knew was that it sounded funny in the movie, so it was somthing I HAD to add to my repertoire. I thought it was all one word. I wouldn't stop calling my sisters reefer addicts. My parents were appalled and told me they better not ever hear me say that again. Please,... I went to school and called my teacher a reefer addict and she called my parents and I got one my worst whoopings ever. LMAO. Needless to say, I never used the term again. *end sidebar*

Remembered another one. . . Darling Nikki by Prince.

I remember hearing it when I was 8. I just loved the beat. Who knew he was talking about a masturbating sex fiend? I purchased that CD in college and played it on my radio show one night. I WAS HORRIFIED when the lyrics "hit" me. CLAWDAMME!!

Oh, that was my song as kid! I can picture the video now!

"Manic Monday" by the Bangles

"All Night Long" by Lionel Ritchie (my brothers, sisters, and I had a routine to this song)

Remember when you and your girls had a dance "routine" to your favorite song? *lol*
