Kentucky Derby

Well, after we win the NCAA tourney, the next awesome event for KY is the Derby, so who all is coming to Louisville for the infield?

I just got a call yesterday from a friend, he invited me to all the celebrity events, so I should have interesting stories...

Anyone need any advice on what to do, let me know!

Just don't drink too many of them mint juleps! One of the few horse races I watch (and bet on, along with the Preakness and Belmont), even though I've never been to Kentucky (connecting through CVG (Cincinatti-Northern Kentucky Airport, which is in Covington) doesn't quite count! )

Listen smartass, some people that don't live in Kentucky do care about the derby. If not I wouldn't meet people from other states every year, and celebrities wouldn't come. So, while no its not mardi gras some people do give a flyin' hoot!

And to answer the original question I think I will be going this year!!!

Hey...I'm not from Kentucky but I love the Derby. Visited Churchill Downs on several occasions just never during the Derby. I would kill to come one year though. I think I love it so much because it always falls on or near my birthday...plus I absolutely love horses. A related note...my lil sis in the sorority is from Louisville and we were talking tonight about the Derby at our Founder's Day Banquet...it got brought up because we had Kentucky Derby Pie.

I've never been to Kentucky, nor the Kentucky Derby, but I had a great time at the Melbourne Cup in November 2001!

I really enjoyed seeing everyone all dressed and checking out the other hats, etc. The department store, MYER (kind of like Nordstrom's) sponsors a fashion contest called "MYER Fashions on the Field", where it's like a pagant competition, but for your outfits.

I've never been to the Derby (yawn), but I did go to the last party Anita Madden had before she quit doing them. Man...that was a sight to behold.

I'm just saying. . .they have to PAY people to come here for it
Unfortunately, it's the only thing this state has going for them right now. . .

By the way, I didn't know that LOUISVILLE ISN'T THE CAPTIAL OF KENTUCKY. . .

I've been living here for 3 years and I thought this the whole time. . .

I'm not going this year but i've marched in the Pegasus Parade (for those who aren't aware, that's the KY Derby's parade) twice. Louisville is always fun around derby time.

1. That is pretty ignorant, not to sound rude, but a joke around here is how do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky, Louis-ville or Looey-ville? the person says whatever and we reply with "Dumbass it's Frankfort." Seeing as at my school in 4th grade we had to learn the capitals it seems really weird.

2. People from all over the WORLD come to the Kentucky Derby. It makes headlines in Saudi Arabia, England, etc. This event is called the greatest 2 minutes in sports, PERIOD! That was not coined by someone from Louisville.
The Kentucky Derby is one of three horse races that attract over 1 Billion dollars worth of money, from sponsors, to sales, etc.

3. Louisville has a lot going for it since is the 16th largest city in the nation- hell fire we are also ranked one of the top 10 cities to own a business in. Things are on the up and up for us!

The thing is. . .you can claim being a city. . .but the city doesn't want the CRIME that comes with it. . .they can't even agree on who they want on the police force. . .it won't be long before they split back into two different counties. . .

As for the rest of your comment, I'll dismiss it. I'm from DALLAS, an actual real big city. To me, Louisville is still the country. You guys are just NOW getting Hispanic. And the people who are from other countries that are here. . .are STUDENTS. Or are you just now realizing that Afrikkans(Morracans, Mauritanians, Egyptians--hell, they live on Westport Rd) have been here for quite a while. Half of the people in the US don't even know where Kentucky is.

You're right, my bad, louisville isn't a big city, hell I mean we are larger than Nashville, Seattle, Memphis, Austin, Baltimore, but that is nothing, I guess I'll just go husk some corn!

We country folk, the hell am I thinking...

Aren't you living in Indiana anyway, if you don't like Louisville, then don't come here.

I'll be chillin' in the infield for the Derby...that trip's kicking off a summer of debauchery since I'll be going to Vegas a few weeks later and then New Orleans.

Hey Now!...
The Kentucky Derby is a HUGE southern "old guard" event. It draws alot of fans & followers from the deep south. My friends used to go every year, and describe it as Mardi Gras with horses. Theres the 2 sides too the old southern take where there are dressy cocktail parties before the race, and the other side where its a crazy free-for-all in the Bluegrass State. It sounds fun, I really want to make it up there one year.
