apartment essentials
I should be moving into my first apartment this August with two friends. I'm excited, but I have no clue what I need to get. Well...I actually do know what I should get, but I don't know what I'm forgetting. This is what I'm planning on buying...
dishes
cookware sets
knives
utensils
storage containers
kitchen towels
toaster
blender
hand mixer
mixing bowls
new bed
The furniture situation is up in the air at the moment. My roommate's family has a lot of furniture at their home that they're not using, so it's possible that we can have it.
I already have....
TV w/ VCR and DVD players
microwave
telephone
comfy chair
Is there anything that I'm missing?

Vaccum cleaner -- small.
Telephone -- if you're not just going to use a cell.
A lamp or lamps.

linens, bedding
curtains
towels
You should ask the landlord/lady what the apartment will have so that you don't buy more than you need. When I moved into my first apartment, there were enough dishes, pots, pans, and utensils for us. If you do need a lot of things, you should check out the local flea markets and yard sales. You can get some good deals. Good luck!

My suggestion always is to also figure out things like do you want cable tv or high speed internet if they are not already included in the rent. Also, if utilities are not included you will have to put down a deposit on just about every utility...which adds up quickly.

Dish Drainer
Toilet Brush
Plunger
These are the things that Mr. Munchkin and I forgot when he was moving into his place. The other stuff is true, but you really can't go without a plunger! (as we learned...ewww!)

Thanks for the suggestions!
nauadpi...thankfully all of the utilities are already connected and we just have to call the companies to have them put into our name so there will be no connection fees!
The apt. already has blinds, and I do have towels and such from the dorms.
I think that my roommates and I are going to get a joint Sam's Club membership, so we can buy all of the cleaning supplies, toliet paper, etc.

It actually might be a good idea to get your chapter a Sam's Membership. I did this, and basically I can use it for whatever I want. The first year, the $15 fee covers 10 people (the Business Membership), and the next year, a $30 fee covers three people. Your name is on the card. It's just cheaper (and makes more sense during Recruiment) to get a chapter membership.
Light bulbs!
Does everyone have to pay deposits? I've had gas/telephone installed, and there hasn't been a deposit.

Don't forget a desk and chair, and bookcases if you don't already have them.
Be sure you have an answering machine unless you have voice mail.
Even if the place comes with blinds, well-chosen curtains or window scarves can really brighten a place up.
Artwork to hang on the walls - and a way to hang it without messing up said walls.
Lamps!

Shower curtain!!
I woke up my first morning in my first apt and couldn't take a shower!
Also, an iron and ironing board. That's one of those things you don't think about until 10 minutes before a job interview and your outfit is wrinkled.
