Alumni at Formal?

I was just curious about something. Many of you know that my chapter was told that nationally we're not allowed to do a sweetheart for formal. Another thing we were told was that we cannot invite Alumni to formals because of insurance reasons and such. Is this true with other chapters? I've heard that some other GLO's on campus invite alumni, and they make money off their tickets, plus a fun way to meet and hang out with them.

I believe it is national Phi Mu policy that Alumnae and actives can not be engaged in formal/organized social events due to risk management/insurance purposes. I believe that alumnae events have to be designated as such. DeltaBetaBaby could probably weigh in on this one since she was a former chapter president and knows more about details than I do.

See, now I'm all confused. When I was collegiate, I remember voting to invite the alumnae. I know my chapter did the same thing in the first years after I graduated, and I think they invited all the alumnae they could find last year.

I do know there are stipulations to alumnae and collegiates having separate gatherings, but I can't give you the exact details now. With the exception that anyone who is not in good standing with the fraternity is not to be invited to join the get togethers if they are designated as Phi Mu functions.

Ah, yes, I can weigh in...

Alumni can NOT be present at any collegiate event where there is alcohol present (BYOB or cash bar).

So, if you have a dry formal, you are permitted to invite alumni.

Sometimes we get around this by having the alumnae be our dates.

But then, our formals are always dry. Campus thing, I think.
