Extending a challenge to TKE chapters across the nation, members of Northern Kentucky University’s chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity are planning the largest chapter-level philanthropy event in the Fraternity’s recent history, called “The Plunge: Jump Into Lake Inferior for a Superior Cause.”
Last year’s event raised over $2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association and in return, energized the chapter to continue illustrating the driving purpose of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, which is to contribute to the advancement of society through the personal growth of members and service to others.
At 12 Noon on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, the men of Tau Kappa Epsilon will plunge into NKU’s Lake Inferior in an effort to raise money for the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute and Alzheimer’s Association, the National philanthropy of the Fraternity. Fraters of the Pi-Omicron chapter are inviting and challenging all Tau Kappa Epsilon chapters, as well as members from all other fraternities and sororities in the Region to join in this monumental event.
The evening prior to the plunge, Pi-Omicron Fraters will be hosting a benefit dinner for participants and donors alike. The dinner will be accompanied by music and an emcee for the evening’s events.
Over the course of three years, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity embarked on a mission to sponsor a research investigation under the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute. The Reagan Research Institute is a portfolio of funded projects within the Alzheimer’s Association Grant Program that serves as a paradigm for one key principle of the entire research effort—a commitment to innovate basic science, exploring the broadest possible of spectrum of approaches to developing Alzheimer’s treatments.
In the1994 letter announcing his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, President Reagan stated, “In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.”
Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity has embraced this same mission, by raising awareness through community service and by helping develop a clearer understanding of this disease through research. A partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association is a fitting tribute to our Alumnus and fellow Frater, Ronald Reagan.
