Improving Rush
The years I have been part of my chapter, our rushes have been substandard, to say the best. The other chapters on campus began to expect less from us I believe. This past fall we took the second most on campus, which turned heads. Tonight, at the IFC meeting our president announced our 11 man spring pledge class to the rest of the houses. Gasps were heard, and the recording secretary gave a double take before finishing writing. Suddenly, the 2 and 4 man classes the other houses took (more typical of our small campus for spring rush) didn't seem quite so good.
The reason I am sharing this is for those of you who are in the same predicament we were in last year - we NEEDED to rush better. Turning the chapter around can be done, and it comes from planning and frame of mind. Your chapter needs to plan out as much as they can so everyone knows their role and what is expected of them. Secondly, the mindset has to be positive. Instead of saying "If we get 20 pledges in the fall", we began purposely saying "When we get our 20 man pledge class in the fall" That did a lot for moral. It is also positive to have everyone in a great mood. After our main rush seminar each semester, some of the brothers put together a powerpoint slideshow of pictures from the last semester, but with humorous captions added to every pic. This gets everyone in a good mood and laughing and remembering all the great things we did together as brothers. This show has done marvels for getting energy up right before rush week starts.
So thats my two cents on rush. Hopefully it might help some of you who are struggling. And besides, who doesn't want to stick it to the other chapters on campus with a great rush?!
