Hey everyone,
I just thought I'd throw this out and get some opinions. Some ladies on campus are interested in expanding Tri-Delt onto UC Riverside's campus. I work for the office of Student Life, which is basically in charge of our Greek affairs, and my boss, the "Greek Advisor" (not his actual title, but he assumes the role) has asked me to look into whether Panhellenic is interested in allowing Tri-Delt onto campus.
I was not at the last Panhellenic meeting where the chapters and officers were to give their votes on whether or not to support Tri-Delt into expanding, but my chapter's PH delegate filled me in. She said all 6 NPC chapters voted no, and the reasons given were as follows:
1) we're supposed to invite Theta back to campus first (not sure if this is true- they're the only chapter that's lost a charter at UCR since Greek life began in 1975).
2) not all houses are at total (total is 70- 5 houses are over and the other is very close at 55-60).
3) The PH officers believe that another chapter will decrease numbers for everyone else.
I, as an employee who deals with Greek life and as a member of an NPC sorority on campus, do not feel that these reasons are legitimate to disallow Tri-Delt from expanding. Adding them to our currently small, yet increasingly stronger Greek system would be a huge help in getting Greek life more appreciated and recognized by the administration and would allow numbers to go up more, as well as promoting Greek unity.
For all of you moderators, advisors, and alums out there who know a lot about expansion (and pretty much everything else!): Are there any NPC rules that stipulate whether or not those reasons are valid/invalid in allowing Tri-Delt to expand onto campus? Are there any resolutions to the NPC greenbook that would make those reasons valid (we can't find anything in our greenbook, standing rules, or bylaws that states we have to have all chapters at total, allow another chapter to come back, etc)?
Please let me know what you all think. I'm personally unhappy because my chapter did not discuss our chapter vote at meeting, yet somehow it ended up as a no- which I disagree with wholeheartedly. I would love to take any information back to my boss also so that we may discuss this with the ladies interested in Tri-Delt.
Thanks!
