Thumbs down What did you hate most about being kid?

That other thread had me depressed, lol.

When I was a kid (and teen) I hated:

*8 hour days of school
*Bedtimes
*Detentions
*Curfews
*Not being able to drive
*Not being able go anywhere I wanted
*Groundings and spankings
*Two words: NO FREEDOM!!!

There's a LOT more, I just can't think of it.

Bedtime was the absolute worst!

(Apparently it still is b/c I was asst. teaching a bunch of 3rd graders and they were like "wow you're old! do you drive? do you have a boyfriend? you're tall! what time do you go to bed?" it was adorable)

OK, this is probably just a sign of how argumentative I can be, but
I absolutely hated not being taken seriously!! It didn't matter if I was right or not, anything I said was met with, "How cuuuuuuuuuuuuute!" or just being ignored. Like telling my dad that there was a giant dog eating part of the new lawn furniture in our backyard. (It was on the loose and our neighbors kept it in a little room so it was really hyper.)
He was like, "sweetie, dogs don't do that."
20 minutes later he was calling our neighbors because the cushions and chair frame were either gone, or had bite marks in them.
Its nice to be 20 and have people listen to you, but sometimes I think they forget i'm not little anymore. lol

Having to get rides to all my activities. Not being able to drive in other words.

Having my mom ask me what time I was going to make it to bed (still get that occasionally when I'm at home, funny thing is I stay up WAY later at home than I do at school)

Chores, like having to hand wash the dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning my room.

Getting yelled at for watching TV shows like the Simpsons (all through Junior high my mom got pissed that my little bro and I would watch an hours worth of the simpsons through syndication after school). But it's not like I came from a particulalry strict family.

I hated the period from about 14 until 17 whenever we had family over. I'm 5 years older than my oldest cousins (and 16 years older than my youngest cousin) so I was always too old to be with the kids but not old enough to be with the adults.

I was lucky when I was kid. I never had a bedtime and I never had a curfew.

Of course I had yucky braces and even yuckier glasses, but those eventually passed...except the glasses part.

I guess the biggest thing I hated was the fact that I was the youngest--the youngest cousin, the youngest sibling...so everyone picked on me.

You're going to probably think I'm bitter by this post. I appologize ahead of time, but who knows? Maybe I am!

I absolutely HATED not being taken seriously... and I still do.

I am 20 years old, and I work in a newspaper as a reporter. I was hired when I was 18. Everyone else there is over 30. I can't tell you how many times I got asked how old I was. It got to the point where I would lie about my age and say I was older (which was still probably a young age in their eyes). I am also commonly referred to as "the baby." They suposidly did it in fun, but it really bothers me. I am constantly trying to prove myself, and then when they do that, I just feel knocked down again.

But I also hate hearing things like, "Oh, you wouldn't understand," or something to that effect where they basically poke at how young I am.
My responce: Well I'm sorry! I can't help when I was born now, can I?

Grrrrrrr. I promise to never do that to my kids. That is so degrating, and greatly infurriates me.

I hated that my sister was "the heart child". She had a hole in her heart at a time when the operation had a poor success rate.
SHE GOT EVERYTHING! (I got the hand-me-downs) I felt guilty if I showed any jealousy because I was the healthy one. She used it quite effectively so I had to go the other way. In a way, it turned out for the best because I'm not very materialistic, I am far more creative and I can mix and match out the WHAZOO!

I hated being teased by other kids and being told that "Oh, that's just kids being kids". No, it's plain cruelty. I still have lots of emotional scars I'm trying to heal because of being teased (lack of trust, constant body image issues).

I also hated not being able to get a job. I like working and making my own money. When I turned 12, I got my first job and I loved it. I was a very responsible child.

Oh, I hated being MADE to go to church every week. I go now because I WANT to, back then I HAD to. AND I had to see those mean kids who were nasty to me all friggin' week at school, but then sickly sweet nice to me in front of their parents at church. LITTLE BASTARDS!

- Having to wear coke bottle glasses and not being allowed to get contacts
- Not being able to drive
- Ridiculously early bedtimes
- Not being allowed to have my ears pierced when ALL my friends had pierced ears
- Having to learn to play the recorder, even though I really wanted piano lessons
- Having to put up with my father, who firmly believed "spare the rod and spoil the child"
- Two words: Catholic School

OMG ADPiViolets, you have no idea how much you just comforted me.

I totally know what you mean! This is the best- working with older people, and making a comment about like, Nixon's resignation or JFK getting shot and they're like, that's a little before your time, take it from those who lived it, etc. etc.
F$%&! you!!!!! I can read goddamn textbooks, while I might not have had a first eyewitness account I still have a pretty good idea of what went on and the implications it had in history.
