I was part of a DPhiE colony while an undergraduate that didn't charter until after I graduated-- so my process was fairly simple and took very little time. I contacted the HQ and had everything completed in about a month's time (and most of that was because I needed to send a check etc.)

I know my experience is different from most though..... and I feel lucky!

I expressed my interest in October 2000 to EO.
I heard back in February and was initiated in March 2001 (as there was a Spring Pledge Class).

(I was part of a colony that never came to fruition....so, when I expressed my interest 11 years later, I had at least some inside contacts which was very helpful.)

I'm interested in this question too.

I think it might be helpful if those who kindly respond to say whether they were part of a colony that didn't receive its charter until after they graduated, or if they started "cold" with a request to national, or if they had a relative already initiated, etc.

Sorority #1:
- Made first inquiry to the HQ in November 2000 and was finally invited an event in November 2001.
- Decided in December 2001 that this organization wasn't for me after all.

Sorority #2:
- Inquired to the HQ in April 2001 and heard back right away (3 days!!).
- Was finally invited to an event in February 2002.
- By June 2002 I was told that I was considered a strong candidate for alumnae initiation. However, we agreed to put things on hold since I was moving to England for a year. Had I not moved to England, I suspect that I would have been invited for membership and initiated in summer 2002 or possibly with collegiate members in fall 2002.

Fall 1997 - I was an alumna of a local whose chapter was working with NPC Sorority #1 towards affiliation.

Spring 1998 – I was told by NPC sorority #1 that I could be an advisor to the chapter nearest me after initiation. (I was chapter advisor of my local for 6 years.) I contacted an advisor of NPC Sorority #2 (AOII) on that same campus since it was so different from my alma mater. She and I hit it off great. She invited me to Alumnae Panhellenic Luncheons, Teas, etc… At one event, I was able to speak with Gamma Phi Beta’s Betty Quick!

Fall 1999 – Local and NPC Sorority #1 did not work out. I opted not to AI with NPC Sorority #1 because I wanted to stay with my girls. I wanted to be with them if they affiliated. In the meantime, my friend kept telling me about AI with AOII. Again, I had no interest.

May 2000 – Local closed which was devastating. Later that month, my husband and I went to an AOII picnic. I was very nervous and this was compounded by my first trimester. The smell of certain foods was less then appealing and I couldn’t stand to be near someone drinking coffee. However, everyone was so friendly that it felt right.

October 2000 - My friend asked for the umpteenth time when was I going to AI. I surprised her and asked how about next spring. Unfazed, she asked how about next month. We got my paperwork approved in less then two weeks.

November 2000 – I was initiated into AOII and I have been so happy. It is ironic because when my local was founded, AOII was at the top of the list.

I had contacted a lot of NPC groups December of 1999 and heard back from a few within a few days (never heard back from a good number of them). I had narrowed the list down to about 3 and was contacted by the alumnae presidents about a week afterwards (beginning of January). AOII invited me to an outing in mid-January and we hit it off. I filled out the paperwork, sent it in and was initiated with the NM class at Michigan State on March 25, 2000. I also joined them in the pledge ceremony as well as some of the new member classes - which I'm glad I did because I got to know the women of the chapter very well. I also became an adviser for the chapter for the next two years.

To answer the question: from initial contact to initiation was about 3 months - and I had not known any of the members prior to contact.

My little ole story....

I have posted my AI story on another thread but from time i contacted EO in May of 2002 i went to a Alum function that same month and was given the paper work to fill out that night and was initated in November. I would of been initated in June but wanted to be initated with a full class. I have been told i am one of the few that had a relativiely fast track initation.

So 6 months because i waited .... if not i would of gotten initated within 2 months.

From the time I first started looking until AI, 2.5 years.
From the time of my first sorority contact until AI, a little over 2 years. Sorority #1 & #2 did not work out.
From the time of my first official contact with AXD until AI, 5.5 months.
