The Baltimore Ravens have promoted Ozzie Newsome to general manager and
executive vice pesident, ESPN has learned.
The Ravens will make the announcement at a news conference this afternoon.
Newsome will receive a five-year contract.
Newsome becomes the only African-American in the NFL with general manager as
part of his title. He had the title of senior vice president of football
operations for the Ravens since the fall of 2001.
Newsome retired from football following the 1990 season, his 13th with the
Browns, and Cleveland owner Art Modell hired him as a special assignment
scout. Two years later he was promoted to assistant to the head
coach/offense-pro personnel. In 1994 Newsome was named the Browns' director
of pro personnel.
Newsome was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and held the
career record for receptions by a tight end (662) until it was broken by
Shannon Sharpe last season.
