disrespect during homecoming

Last week was homecoming at my school. We were paired with 2 fraternities which shall remain nameless because my chapter is now extrememly sngry with them. Through Homecoming week was are supposed to participate in a few philahthropic events, play flag football, and participate in the float building contest. There are also closed theme parties as well. Last week was also midterm week. ON tuesday many of my sisters stayed home to study for their early morning Wednesday midterms because school is a lot more important than Homecoming. As a result, one of the fraternities decided to tell us they were doing the float (and then didn't do it), when we all showed up at the Thursday party they decided to leave, they cancelled Friday's party completely to "work on the float" when in reality they used our money to buy beer and have a party with another sorority, and, the worst part of all, they didn't show up for Omega Mouth.

This made us really angry because Omega Mouth is a lipsynching and dancing competition to raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Athens. the same rude fraternity called the other fraternity that we were paired up with to tell them not to worry about coming because they wanted their pledges to do it. However they never showed up. They live across the street from us so we went over there 4 times to try and get 5 guys to do it. they kept telling us that they were on their way. the last time they flat out told us they were not going to participate, and told us it had something to do with socials. We were embarrased in fromt of the greek community, and we heard people ask others if we even PARTICIPATED in Homecoming.

I have a chapter of only about 53 women (small for our campus) and we're trying to figure out what to do. Anyone have any suggestions?

You have got to be kidding. That was really, really horrible of them! We've gotten the shaft from a few jerky fraternities in our time, too, but that's minor compared with what you all had to put up with. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what to tell you--but my advice would be to have your chapter let the fraternity(s) know that you are extremely upset about this little situation, and that they need to work out some kind of way to fix it. If they're still uncooperative, I'd say go to the higher-ups (like the IFC on your campus) and see what they say.

I was back in Athens for Homecoming and had a great time.

It did appear to me that there was a unusually small number of Greek floats in the Homecoming Parade this year. In fact, I only remember a couple of them.

all of the GLOs made floats, however, when we got to the end of the parade with our banner we found out that most of the floats couldn't be judged because they stalled before they even got to court street. that may be why. we only saw 3 or 4 greek floats make it to the end.

Honestly,
That really sucks, and is very absurd and rude that a fraternity would treat you ladies that way. The one thing I have never really done, and have told brothers to do is not treat sororities with a lack of respect. It's one thing to not get along with them at all due to circumstance. But to do homecoming, greekweek, etc., and not even show up and use money for stupid crap is disrespectful. That just doesn't reflect well on fraternity men.

Yes, Homecoming is more important than school, but one of the things you learn in a sorority is time management. If sisters put off studying till homecoming week, that's their own fault. If I was in that fraternity and found out that my partners blew off events to study for tests they knew about for weeks, I would be mad too. I'm sure a lot of them also had midterms.

Reason #1,572 why I am so glad we built a float with a fraternity for homecoming and that was it...

That was a terrible thing for them to do. One of the things *MOST* fraternities pride themselves in is being a gentleman, and what they did in no way shows any respect to your sorority or even the other fraternity whom they called to tell them not to bother coming because "because they wanted their pledges to do it."

*Two* GLO's missed out on Homecoming events because of this fraternity you speak of. That is NOT greek unity!

Even though you say you are one of the smaller houses, I would speak to a greek advisor to see if something could be done so that things of that nature don't happen to you or other groups in the future.. but that's just my .02

Sound like they could use some engineering help.

I was sitting in the bleachers at the reviewing stand at Baker Center, and, obviously, the floats didn't make it that far.

At least the Delt/Fuzzie float made it.

(I won an award for being the original announcer for the "110," so it was a good weekend for me.)

Again, sorry for the treatment your sorority received. There's no excuse for that.

Ordinarily I would agree with you, but this year sorority Bid Day was also the first day of homecoming. Therefore no one in my chapter had much of an opportunity to study. The guys knew about recruitment because 1) they came over to our house drunk the night before pref and told us we could pref them, and 2) we have this wonderful tradition called running of the bulls where the new and disaffiliated members run down the street to their new houses and the fraternity men watch and yell at them.

BTW Deltalum, I though I would let you know that Delt/Fuzzie came in 3rd place in the Homecoming competition.

Whaaaa??!? I will amend my answer to "who makes the school's schedule and what have they been smoking?" Good grief, we had people having fits last year because homecoming was 2 weeks early, I can't imagine rush, bid day, midterms and homecoming week all running together. And the Greeks will probably get criticized if their grades suffer from this dumb schedule.

We made it through it so hopefully it will be ok. The worst part about the whole week (in my opinion) was not getting to participate in all the competitions. I went to all their parties (it's not my fault if i didn't get drunk/drunk enough to suit them). We can't be paired with the two fraternities for another 2 years which is nice.

optimist- we're only annoyed at the other fraternity. we're actually good friends and several of our women are dating their men.
