Red face college sports teams hazing??

Perhaps I am just naive, but I was very suprised when I recently discovered the abundance of hazing on my campus -- not among the GLO's, but within the sports teams. A boy on the baseball team described to me his "initiation" night, complete with contests between the new freshman players drinking till they passed out, and just a few nights ago the girl's field hockey team forced their new freshman players to go to the Rainforest Cafe dressed up in halloween costumes and drink. Does anyone else hear about sports teams hazing on their campuses?

Yes, to say the least, there is athletic hazing on my campus. Thank God my track team doesn't do it.

I think the worst instance I have encountered is our baseball coach. Ignoring all the stuff the other players put new members through, he expects them to practice at least four hours a day. I think that's just ridiculous, especially since it doesn't even include conditioning, time at the trainer, etc. We're a DIII engineering school and nobody has that kind of time...

I've heard of much worse hazing on athletic teams than among Greeks. Furthermore, I think it still happens much more with athletes because they don't have a national organization to keep them in check and often, the school doesn't care or even notice as long as no one gets hurt. Go to www.stophazing.com and there are many situations.

Since athletic teams are sanctioned by the University, it is MUCH harder for them to dicipline them for hazing. Shooting your own foot, really. At my school, there is a lot of hazing that goes on. The volleyball team shaves their heads. Women's crew carries around large oars to class. I have witnessed to the new men's soccer members be bossed around naked outside my dorm window. I just joined the rugby team and have heard roumors about the beer wagon. But, if Chi O was to do ANY of this, we'd be klicked off campus immediately. I think we take much more responsibility for our actions than normal clubs or teams on campus. Frankly, I'm prund of that, but I think my university should recognize it, and support us because of it. Of course, they don't, and that is unfortunate.

Report the hazers

If you see hazing among the sports teams, make a phone call - to the Dean and to the press.

Or send an email, with a copy to the media chief (not to some minor sportwriter)

Maybe the administration will overlook it, but if they sense the press is interested, good things might happen.

The UGa football team used to have a "night at the (some alums) farm" for rookies, including nudity, booze, and maybe even sex with farm animals. when this came out in the press, it ended - although no action was taken publicly.

If you're interested in the worst sports hazing ever to be publicized, check the links to the U Vermont Hockey Team at www.badjocks.com

Interestingly, the fall after the whole hockey season was terminated due to hazing, the U VT soccer team got in trouble for hazing, including nude running thru the woods during pre-season training. People never learn.
