Why Sigma

Brothers I attended an NPHC forum on BGLOs and there was a young gentleman who stood up and asked a question that caught me off guard, He asked a member of ALPHA PHI ALPHA "why did you pledge ALPHA". I am a member of PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INC. and I knew what fraternity I was going to be apart of way before stepping foot on my undergrad campus. I have been around Sigma all my life and I have known what i wanted to pledge most of my life. I have every organization represented in my family from Alpha to AKA to Zeta to Delta to Omega to Kappa and of course Sigma. My father is a SIGMA and my mother is an AKA. My mother is a LINK and both of my parents are very active in the Urban League. So which fraternity I was going to pledge was decided way before I got to college. But for those of us who make the decision while we are in college and attend interest meetings, if a young brother interested in greek life were to ask you why did you pledge SIGMA. What would you say?

BEHOLD HIM IN THE EAST..........

PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INC.

I can relate frat. But by my mother being a Zeta and my father being frat I had it in my mind Sigma was not gonna be for me. My mom wore letters on the day I moved in as a freshman. Frat immediately bumrushed us and helped me bring my stuff in. From that point on they looked out for me and made sure I met the right people and got into the right events and organizations. I gained a respect because they were living our motto.

I hope this is open to members of other orgs....

I hope the men of PBS don't mind be putting in my 6 cents but......

When I chose Delta, it was a big stir in the family b/c my sister is a ZETA. And although I never said I wanted to be a Zeta, it was just expected that I would be. But when I went to college (Old Dominion University) and saw everyone represented on campus AND after I did my research on ALL the organizations AND after I researched why Black people called themselves Greek.........There was no other choice for me! I felt the founders of DST represented LEADERS and not followers AND they were in tuned with politics. These are characteristics that I, myself possess, so I wanted to be in an organization that I could identify with. I personally think people should choose organizations based on what they want to do, not what their family thinks they should choose.

And I'm owt!

Frat, I am curious. Why did it catch you off guard? That is a question every GDI would asked?
For me Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was the only choice.
Why Zeta?
When I saw the Zeta shield. I became hook. This is the shield I can stand behind. But then I said to myself. Let me read about the Zetas. The more I read and the more I wanted to be a part of Zetadom. But I had to force myself to research all the other sororities. Being a Zeta is a lifetime commitment. So I research each one.
Zeta Phi Beta was still the only choice.

I first found out about black fraternities in high school. Nobody in my family was greek so I didn't have an obligation to any organization, so everytime I saw a group of greeks together, I changed my mind and wanted to join that organization. My junior year in high school, while on a college tour, a lady told me to wait until I got to college to decide which organization I wanted to join, because what's hype on one campus, is totally lame on another campus. When I got to Alabama A&M University in 1995 the Alphas and Sigma were the only frats about something on campus, and I got to know some Sigmas and pledged Phi Beta Sigma in Spring 1997 and the rest was history.
