Sweet Home Alabama
Just came from seeing it. Good flick. Her HUSBAND is cuuuuuuute. Her fiance was the "nerd" in Can't Buy Me Love who has turned out to be quite a looker.
Go check it out and tell me what you think.

***WARNING**** There may be spoilers in here . . . or Not
I really wanted to hear the chick perspective on this movie because it was the quintessential chick flick.
I was dissapointed by the movie although I did miss the first 15 minutes . . was it crucial?
I may go see it again . . .
Ok the dialogue was good. Some of the scenes were really funny also . . .
But here is where I was dissapointed.
There was no real tension!
Lets start with the ex Husband!
They made the ex-husband both better looking and more personable.
The ex totally made himself over . . for her! He started his own business, made money, learned how to dance all to become worthy to get her back after he actually had followed her to NYC and seen that he would have to do these things in ordser to be good enough to deserve her!
Does the famous quote: "You had me at hello occur to anyone yet?"
Oh and did I mention he was fricking self actualized? I mean he met all her anger etc with self deprecation and humour.
The Fiancee
Her Fiancee on the other hand was nice, sweet, romantic as all hell, good looking, and faced down the wrath of his social conscious politcal mom to marry Resse's character.
Oh and did I mention that he almost instantly forgave Resse for running a completely cruel and calculated deception on him?
He was actually a richer, smoother, better talker, even more actualized and even more sincere example of her ex-husband.
Did we all notice that he got Tiffany's to stay open late so that all the customers were gone and basically said pick a ring? (Great Scene)
His onlly flaw may have been that he was a little too self actualized lol.

Sorry Continuing
I could actually relate more with the Fiancee that was abandoned than the ex-husband . . . and I think a lot of well-educated guys could also.
Which kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
I guess what bothered me the most is that the movie just fizzled.
It wasn't a total feel good story like the classic Lifetime movie.
And it didn't have the tension necessary to make a really good comedy.
There wasn't a clear difference between the two men.
Usually in comedy one guy is actually trying to rescue the girl from another guy (the classic mistake).
Or is chasing her and trying to get her back that way. (my best friends wedding)
There was no real conflict. And all the characters were way too mature to be that interesting.
I guess the movie was just limp . . .
IT deserved an awwwwww but it was a sweet public kiss awww not a first kiss or marriage kiss awwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Ok what did the girls think??

He had me @ "pick a ring."
But James you cynic you, JAKE was her first love and her best friend. He was the romantic. Yeah missing the first 15 minutes would help you understand the symbolism of thunder and lightning.
She picked the man who would ALWAYS love her and would never have to defend her to his mom.

James--CrimsonTide was right--the first part ofthe movie was important--gave some insight. The husband was her FIRST love--that in itself is VERY important to a girl. Every girl has that first love memory hidden somewhere deep in her heart--she may never utter a word to anyone--but somewhere deep in the girl's heart that guy is still there.
The husband loved her for who she was--back then, not now. He knew all those secrets and truly loved her regardless of the girl she became.
Yes, the fiancee loved her--accepted her past, forgave her for lying to him. But, why would the person you love so much and planning on marrying --not know her past until he tracked her down??? In my opinion, it goes back to the first love thing and trying to escape her past. If she was "in love" she would have told him every secret she carried with her. The fiancee did love her though--that was evident at the end--at their wedding.
The movie was sweet--yes I shed a few tears!!! I would even see it again--it was heartwarming!!!
And as far as the Tiffany's engagement scene---seemed a little far fetched--but my mom, nor my husband's is the mayor of NYC. But a proposal that involved a blue Tiffany box would have me swooning--I am sure I would have passed out cold if I was told to "pick a ring"!!!!
I say see the movie--
Wendi

I went to see it opening night at midnight. I think almost everyone in our house went and we took up at least two whole rows in this giant theater...anyway...
***possible spoilers***
Overall, I thought the movie was great! I don't think it's one that you can over analyze, you just have to enjoy it. IMO, the reason there wasn't that head-butting tension between the two men was because the audience was suppose to like them both. I liked the scene where the fiancee showed up at the Carmichael plantation and ran into the husband.
James, I think by missing the first fifteen minutes you missed out on the importance of their childhood connection and the symbolism of his glass business.
The one thing that bothered me was that Melanie mentioned getting pregant but they didn't follow up with that. Obviously she must have had a miscarriage...I wish they would have talked about that. It could have been a good scene between Melanie and Jake.
Side note: Am I the only person who didn't find the Tiffany's part romantic? Sure, it was a nice movie gesture, but who does that? I would rather have a guy that knew my tastes and picked out something for me. That makes it special.

The "Carmichael plantation" is extremely close to here and I used to be in charge of the gardens there as part of my assignment.
Edited to add: and it's very haunted. If I didn't have to go into the house, I didn't.

I agree with whoever said we were supposed to like both of the men and empathize with MElanie and her decision making process.
I also think it was easy for Andrew to let her go because he knew that in her heart while she loved him, her heart forever belonged with Jake. Plus if he really wanted her he would have tried to convince her. Andrew could give her the material but Jake could give her the familiarity and he loved her for her: the good, the bad, Smooter, the dead dog, Felony Melanie , etc.
Oh and they did a brief talk about the miscarriage at the Dog Cemetery.
Ultimately Melanie being away for all those years taught her some things and caused her to mature. Even though she "rejected" a lot of her past, that past was still there to accept her, success and all.

I saw this movie last night and I thought it was so cute. I think she made a really good decision in the end. When you have the opportunity to marry for love or for money... go with the love! I'm sure that down the road she would have regretted her decision if she stayed with Andrew. She can still be a successful designer, it'll just require more of her so she can spend lots of time in Alabama

I was a little disappointed with the movie. Parts of it were just too unbelievable (redecorating Jake's entire house in a few hours (appliances included), Jake and the fiancee accidently hooking up, Jake happening upon her while she's in the pet cemetery crying over the dog, meeting at the end at the exact spot where it all began, etc...). Then, it just wasn't funny. There were plenty of scenes that were SUPPOSED to be funny, but they just weren't to me. Especially the scenes when she first arrives back in Alabama. It was just too slapstick for my taste. It did, however, get better towards the end. I also wish they would have spent more time on her life in NY.
Also, I know that there are still towns like Pigeon Creek (lol), Alabama, but I did think there was a little overkill with the southern hick stereotypes.
I know it sounds like I hated the movie, but I actually didn't. It was worth my $5.25. It just could have been a lot better.

I loved the movie but I'm a bit confused about two things.
First, the hubby mentioned at some point something about him being sorry for what he did. I can't remember exactly what he said, but he made it sound like he did something wrong. It wasn't an "I'm sorry about the miscarriage." It was more along the lines of him doing something wrong.
Also, as much as I loved the movie, they kind of ignored the fact that she has her whole life and career she loves and is gaining notoriety back in New York. So she gave up her entire career and is going to move back to Pidgeon Creek???
BTW, for those of you who have seen Can't Buy Me Love, you probably remember the guy who played his best friend. The big geek who Dempsey shoved aside when he became cool? The actor who played him was the same guy who played the town cop in Sweet Home. It was a Can't Buy Me Love reuinion!
(just in case any of you were looking at the cop and thinking 'i know this guy! who is he????')
