what happens when a greek transfers?
I was just wondering...
Say some goes to college, becomes a member of a non-local sorority, and then transfers. Would the person be able to join the chapter of the sorority they are a member of at their new school?
I was just wondering because I have a friend who was a NPC sorority at one college and left because of family money problems, and now she's going back to school, but she's transferring to a college in our hometown which has a chapter of the sorority she is in, but I didn't know if she could join that chapter or not.
If this is private info, just let me know

I believe that all the NPC groups have an affilation process for transfer students. Your friend should contact her national office for the correct procedure.

Yep PnguinTrax is right. Contacting the headquarters is probably the best thing to do.
When I transferred to another school, I wanted to take part in the Deltasig chapter here, and had to contact headquarters and the chapter at this school and had no problem affilating with the chapter... but my case is kind of different because Delta Sigma Pi is a professional co-ed fraternity and not an NPC or IFC organization.

We just had to great girls affiliate with out chapter this past spring. The way it works for Tri Delta is there has to be a semester where the transfering girl is at your school, but not affilated yet with you chapter, she just hangs out and gets to know you and your chapter gets to know her. Then at the end of the semester we vote on whether or not ask her to affilate with out chapter. It wasn't an issue for us, we love both our new sisters, but I can imagine situations where it wouldn't work for the chapter or the memeber to affiliate and in that case I think they would go alum.

In AXD the new chapter does not have a choice on whether she can affiliate. The idea is, a sister is a sister, and you should trust your sisters on other campuses to pick good ones. However, the chapter she left can prevent her from affiliating - don't know if that happens much.
In reality, if a transfer doesn't fit in with her new chapter, she'll usually voluntarily choose not to affiliate. There are some schools, I understand, where chapters are completely inundated with transfers, but I don't know much about that myself.

frat transfers
My Big Brother transfered to our chapter (RIT) from our chapter at Cornel. He went active here and since he is from an older chapter he has the highest pin out of all of us, ever.
I'm sure it happens all the time

I affiliated after transferring schools and it was a wonderful experience. I was really nervous at first, but I was very much welcomed with open arms. Twice the sisters -- and now -- twice the alumni newsletters!
As far as what all I had to do, I had to prove that I was a member in good standing and that I didn't owe money to the previous chapter. The adviser from my initiating chapter provided that. Good luck to you or whoever you are asking for!

My chapter never had anyone transfer in or out when I was there, so I'm not sure how we do things.
Question... What happens if a sister in an NPC sorority transfers and wants to affiliate with the chapter at her new school, but that chapter is at total and her affiliating would push it over total? Is an exception made, does she have to wait until the chapter is under total again, or what?

The chapter I affiliated with was at total but it didn't affect anything since I was an initiated member. Had I been a pledge who had transferred, I'd have had to re-rush.

That's how it worked for me as well.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the voting part is really horrible?? Wouldn't you consider initiated tri delts all over the country your sister? Why in the world would you have to vote to let her affiliate?!? I can understand maybe if she had a grade problem or financial problem, but those things work themsleves out based on the rules that go for every member of the chapter. I'm an Alpha Phi that just transferred and affiliated with my new chapter, and I can't imagine them voting on me - I'd be heartbroken because they just accepted me with open arms...not to mention that I am older than most of the house anyway so I pull rank as far as being an Alpha Phi goes...I don't know that whole think really bothered me, sorry.
But anyway what I did was just contact the presidents and/or advisors of the chapters I applied to, and of course let my old chapter know what I was doing. I think I got really lucky though, because it turned out there was room in the chapter house, and the chapter is pretty large and stable, and I have held a few positions so they were really excited for me to join and add a different perspective on Alpha Phi.

I know it sounds sucky, but even though we are sisters, there are differences from chapter to chapter that can sometimes be immense. I know that had I transferred, there are chapters I wouldn't have fit in with, and vice versa.
Better to not affiliate than pay tons of dues to a chapter that you feel uncomfortable in and don't enjoy. And better for the chapter to not affiliate a girl, rather than affiliate her out of politeness and then have her always be on the outside of all those "unofficial" things that make being in a sorority fun.
