Rushing & Pledging Sober
Hey. I am writing this because a friend of mine doesn't drink. She wants to go through rush with me but isn't sure whether she will be accepted later on because she doesn't drink. Do you think this will be a problem for her? Oh yea she will be going to East Carolina University as well. I would appreciate all advice about how your chapter would react(both in front of her and behind her back).

No way. I know all kinds of greeks that don't drink. I even know people in the "party houses" that don't drink. It's one of those things that is not nearly as big of a deal as many non-greeks think it is. She will have no problem being accepted, and many of her sisters will respect her more for it.

It is not a problem. I know one sister who doesn't drink at all in my house. My roomie/sorority sister last night told me she is sick of going out and drinking. She said even going every couple of weeks gets hold. So there are a lot of girls who still want to have fun w/o drinking. Plus the girls who do drink will see a plus in a girl who doesn't drink bc she can be a sober sis they can count on. I think if a house doesn't want a nondrinker then they aren't a house worth joining.

Abstaining from drinking shouldn't be a problem at all...since no one's SUPPOSED to be drinking in the house! I know we have a lot of nondrinkers in my house (for religious as well as personal reasons), and it really doesn't cause too much of a problem. Best of luck!

We had a couple sisters who rarely drank, one because she just didn't like the taste and one cause she was a townie and didn't want to go home to mom & dad all buzzed.
My (and most sisters') basic outlook was "fine, whatever, more for me! " They were 2 of the most fun sisters to be around and it wasn't like they "preached" to anyone, so I didn't give a crap if they drank or not. By the time you get to college, the peer pressure to drink like it was in high school is pretty much gone - people are growing up and they don't need someone to validate their choices. Your friend should be fine.

I see no problem with that. There is one girl in our house who doesn't drink, and no one sees it as a problem. When we go out, she gets soda or water. No one looks at her differently or thinks less of her because of that...its just a different choice. Just like no one dislikes the girls who smoke, or don't smoke!

There is no way that any sisters would know whether or not your friend drinks unless they ask her...and if a sorority is selecting girls based on what they should be then drinking should not be an issue...at all!!! And after the fact, it should not matter either. We have girls who do not drink and I envy them...I often wish I had made that decision...Good Luck with rush and keep us posted!!!
P.S. My best friend from high school is a chi omega at East Carolina!!! Her name is Dani...just in case you meet her during rounds!!!

Honestly she'll be fine if she doesn't drink. There are a few girls in my house who don't drink, and I know that we all still accept and love them regardless!

Whether someone drinks or not should not matter at all. Greek life is not about worrying about drinking. We had people that never drank and they weren't looked at as different at all.

Well, I don't drink and EVERYONE in my chapter knows it...and EVERYONE is fine with it. In fact, I speak out against it openly. I've never even been to an alcoholic function/social. I would say about 1/5 to 1/4 of my chapter does not drink, and if so, they rarely do (maybe once every couple of months). I've never been looked down upon for my beliefs, because my sisters accept me for who I am and what I stand for. So, I would have to say that this should not be a huge concern...atleast it hasn't been for me.

If that group feels she shouild drink against her will, then that is wrong Group!
We set up a program several years ago for some one to be at the House as a disignated driver ( more than one ) If they turn down a designated driver then she should not join them as that is an asset! Some one with an unclouded mind and abilities is my pick!

She will be fine! A lot of my sisters don't drink. Even in my boyfriend's fraternity, there are some guys who don't drink, mainly for religious reasons. No one has a problem with it. Sometimes there is some lighthearted teasing ("Bennet, man, how about a body shot?! Hahahahah!!!"), but it is not meant in a mean way, and everyone laughs. The only time people have a problem with non-drinkers is when they are preachy (you know, those good Christians who look down their noses at everyone who isn't a holy roller - if i wanted a lecture, I would call my mom) and people who lie about it to sound cool ("Dude, I got so f**ked up last night!" "No you didn't! Don't lie!"). If drinking is not her thing, people will respect that and not think twice about it, as long as she respects the fact that other people DO drink. But it will not affect her prospects during rush.

I don't see how that would even come up.
Call me crazy, but this alumn thinks...if you are under, you shouldn't drink at your organization's events anyway, so they cannot look down at your drinking habits outside of their circle, unless the habit is dangerous to you or the group and being sober 24/7 should be a plus.
If you are over, no one can force you to drink.
P.S. ECU has extended the deadline to the 8th(I think). Call the Pahellenic office. 252-382-4235
