I'm assuming that you have taken PR classes? Are there any professors from your major that you could talk to? My pr prof helped a student get an internship at Sony-- he is one of the top people and has met Destiny's child etc. She read a letter that he sent about all that he is doing. When you find an awesome professor they can really help you with references and they know what looks good on a resume.

I heard about an internship today in one of my classes for the Williamsport Crosscutters Baseball team (they are a farm team for one of the big teams). Anyway, they need a PR intern for the summer. Best part is that it's paid. It's in Williamsport, PA, though, north of what you were looking for.

My advice is to just start sending out your resume and a cover letter to as many teams as possible. That's how I got the internship I'm at right now (I'm also PR). I got a lot of names of companies from friends and sent random stuff out and I got in! You just have to keep plugging away.

Check in Monster.Com for a company called Women in Sports (or something like that). They claim to have sports jobs available all over the country.

Are you locked into the DC/Baltimore area. Sports PR jobs, much like broadcasting, are fairly scarce. If you are willing to relocate, it could be much easier to find work.

Good luck.

Good advice, Hootie. In my experience that is almost always the case.

Not 100%, but almost.
