Sigma Chi mentioned on friends?

I'm sure this thread has been done before, just don't know where it is.
I was watching an episode of friends. The one where Rachel bumps into an old college friend. The one she apparently kissed at the Sigma Chi luau (sp?). Did I hear this correctly? Are they not supposed to use fake names...unless of course they have permission. Just something I heard. The other one they mentioned was Theta Beta Pi...

Maybe Sigma Chi gave them permission to use their name b/c Jennifer Aniston's (very hot) husband, Brad Pitt, is a Sigma Chi?

Any Sigma Chi's know?

I actually watched the episode today as well. (Huge Friends fan here) They did indeed say Sigma Chi. I'm guessing that's because Jennifer Aniston's husband (the hottie Brad Pitt) is a Sigma Chi.
I thought they actually did say Beta Theta Pi.

Haven't seen the episode, but I have heard some people get confused and say Theta Beta Pi...One girl (an obvious Independent) was trying to find my house for a meeting and asked me where "Theta Beta Pi" was. Probably due to the closeness in sounds of Beta and Theta...

Yah, that was the episode with Winona Ryder. I would have thought you were right about the Bratt Pitt reasoning....but there's no way they were married when that episode came out, much less even dating. That show was from 2 or 3 seasons ago and they just got hitched last year.
I was suprised about that one too...

I would guess, if it was a Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Chi thing, you could probably trace someones roots back to Mizzou (set director, producer, actor...). Brad Pitt was a Sigma Chi there, and the Beta's and Sigma Chi's dominate that campus and have for decades. Just a guess though.

You don't need anyone's permission to mention a fraternity in a fictional context, especially in passing! (I'm sure it would be different if you wanted to write a whole book.) Usually when something like this happens it's because someone involved is in that org.

Obviously, if what had happened was extremely negative ("Remember the time we hazed the pledges?") it would upset the fraternity, but usually these are value-neutral or positive references. It's good PR!
