Help Me Please!!!

OK...this topic isn't directly related to rushing but it does have to do with encouraging people to go greek. I just got asked by my Sunday School teacher at church to speak about greek life with the recent high school graduates. I realize that most of these kids have probably decided by now if they will rush this fall but I'm at least hoping to change a few opinions about greeks. I am very anxious about talking about greek life at my church because I go to a very conservative Southern Baptist church. I am sure that many people in my church totally believe all of the nasty stereotypes they hear and see about greeks. What I'm asking of y'all is to help me come up with some good things to say and point out that will help them see how wonderful being greek really is. I am speaking on August 12 so any help before then is gladly appreciated. Thanks y'all!!!

Apart from stating the obvious, e.g. the facts of fraternities and sororities, I think a good point of reference is to show how diverse and widespread GLO's actually are. Talk about what being greek means to you and how it's changed you for the better.

I think if you stick to the three S's you'll manage fine (sisterhood-service-scholarship) Expanding on these three ideas will really show the positive side to greek life.

My best advice is to speak from your ~heart~.
Think about the reason you decided to Rush/Pledge. What has happened since then? How have your sisters impacted your life? What does your GLO mean to you? Tell a little personal story about something special that someone in your GLO did for you. Talk about the benefits of Greek Life and how it could impact their life. But the best way is to show the graduates through your experiences. Be honest, happy, and confident. I'm sure you'll represent Greeks in a great way! Good luck and let us know how it went.

So you go to a conservative Southern Baptist church. Most likely the kids you are talking to place God pretty high up there on the priority list. Maybe mention that many GLO's are founded upon Christian ideals (loyalty, love, helping one's fellow man, truth, etc), and that joining a GLO should in no way compromise their Christian beliefs. Also mention that many chapters have a weekly Bible study, and that chaplain may be a leadership position that some of these kids may want to pursue. And of course, tell them all that great stuff everyone else already mentioned!

I think one of the Delta Zeta's had this exact same problem (talking to high school students about the benefits of Greek Life) I forgot which forum it was posted in. So you might want to check the Delta Zeta forum and also the Greek Life forum and maybe this forum to see if you can the thread. The thread gots some pretty good responses to.
