Hey guys I was wondering if your school is having budget cuts? I am in the UMass System and the state is cuting the budget by 5.1 percent which equals $25 million. Below you can see how your state measure up. I would like to hear your thoughts about this, if you have any.

I'm glad this topic has been brought up. I go to school in TN and I want to sound positive, but it seriously sucks! Tuition goes up EVERY year because we can't get our budget together! This summer during Summer school, schools across the state closed down because our state's lawmakers couldn't agree on a budget. I work for my school and I didn't get to work for a WEEK..along with thousands of state employees. Now, I know you're like "you chose to go to school there"...but I didn't know all this before I came here. I wish out country would understand that higher education should be one of the most important issues in the US.

Here is anothe reason why we college students need to register to vote and vote for people that are behind PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION! One of the good things about living in Washington DC is that students get instate tuition and any state school in the country.

Well we don't really pay all that much for tuition (especially me since orchestra pays for mostly everything) but tuition is jumping 7% next semester... It'll be a pain for some folks to come up with the $$...

The State of Oklahoma has been hit pretty hard by the financial scandals and almost all state agencies have had to make cuts accross the board.

Currently, my school is under a hiring freeze (profs are overworked) and we can't buy ANY supplies without going through the centralized purchasing department (big pain in the ass).

There are more Students than ever going to College!

But the way the Economy is going no one will have work or can afford to go to College!

Two things interest me on this topic.

First, our son who starts college next month got very nice scholarship offers from two out-of-state, public (state) supported colleges. The aid offers from the "big time" private schools were a joke -- even for a National Merit Scholar.

Second, for the past several years, we as a family have gotten fairly sizable returns from state income tax due to The Tabor Amendment (kinda like Prop. 13 in California). So, in comes a new governor with promises of a big tax cut, which he delivers. Now, we have HUGE deficits, including big budget cuts for state supported universities.

I wasn't and Economics major, but to pass a tax cut as the market is beginning to falter may be politically beneficial, but is stupid in the long run. It's pretty much the same story in the Federal government.

I just hate it when good politics make for hardships for the citizens.

Alumni can help diminish the financial burden on students, their parents, and their state by donating money to their alma maters.

I'm wondering how can this be called budget cuts. Most states except five are actually increasing educational spending. All states combined will spend $63,647,105,000 on education. That is a lot of money.

Our tuition is going up this year due to budget cuts and it is kind of annoying that our school is one of the smaller public schools in the state and we are almost paying the same as the larger schools. The worst part is we dont have any of the "conveniences" of a larger school. We don't have a football team, food court, greek houses, or any student hang out spots. On top of that, our buildings haven't been renovated since the 70's so the rooms have that nasty orange carpet and this horrible stench since we have like 100% humidity everyday.

you all are going to say "Is she out of her gourd?" but in a way I think this could be a good thing.

I think there are a lot of kids being forced to go to college who would rather be working in another profession. Their grades show it...their lack of involvement in the campus shows it. So maybe if it costs more to send them, their thick-headed parents will realize "you know, maybe my son would be a better plumber than accountant" and stop forcing them to attend. Not everyone needs or wants to go to college, and we should stop assuming everyone should. If you weed out the ones who don't want to be there, it will make the campus stronger, be a more positive experience for everyone. and probably increase positive alumni involvement (i.e. $$$).

I know it is still hard for a lot of people who WANT to be in school to get student funding...as usual, unfortunately, the people in the middle are the ones who get screwed.

AMEN!!!! I have been saying this for years. Unfortunately, you can usually tell who is in college to get an education, and who is taking up space. There is NO shame in taking alternative routes after high school.

My little brother went and got his A.A and is now studying I.T. at a trade school to get his certifications. And judging by the way I.T people are being hired out here in L.A, in 3 or 4 years my brother will be taking home a LOT more in salary than I do, fancy law degree and all.

Its a perfectly respectable option, and I wish more people would take it.

I was wondering if the alumni on this board give money/time back to their alma mater. Because I know a lot of people out there that after they graduate they dont want to give any more money back to the school.

I heard a rumor that our school is losing all of its math department TA positions...with my luck the chem department will be next and I'll be out of a job...stupid budget cuts...
