Question Spring Recruitment?

Hi. I'm new to the board and I have a question. I was wanting to participate in rush this past September, but I decided not to because of financial difficulties. Now, my situation is better and I am interested in joining a sorority this spring. How would I go about doing this? What is a good way to get to meet some of the girls, to let them know that I'm interested? There aren't, to my knowledge, any sorority girls in my classes. Any advice would be great! Thanks a bunch!!!

Hi Praisedancer,
I am going to go through spring rush too! I am really excited about it, and like you- i was going to go through fall rush but changed my mind. The reason I decided to wait was because I am new to this school so i decided to just wait. Is yours informal or formal in the spring. I know that if it is formal, you have this sheet to fill out with information about you and there is usually a fee required. Then, there are set parties in the spring that you need to attend. I am not sure if that is how it works for formal rush at your school, but its like that at most. It is a little harder to get invited to parties if it is informal and you dont know any girls. I think the best thing for you to do would be to contact the office of greek life and let them know your information. Maybe if the sororities have web pages, you could email them and let them know you are interested. Also, the office of greek life could give you their phone number to call. Once you get in contact with them, another good move would be to ask them if they would like to have lunch with you some day. That is what is going on with me now. I am going to meet one sorority girl today, and we are just going to go sell our books back, hehe i know its silly but atleast i get to meet her. I am having lunch with two others soon too. I wish you the best of luck, and keep us updated!!

Another thing you could do, is if you don't know any sorority members, but you happen see guys walking around campus and they have fraternity letters on, you could ask them if they know how to get in touch with the sororities, or if they know anything about Spring Rush.

I say this because some fraternity men have sorority girlfriends, & they may be able to refer you to someone who knows how to get involved in Panhellenic Spring Rush, even if they, themselves, don't actually know. Good Luck!

Well, I called the Greek Affairs office yesterday and the secretary took my name and number so that they could contact me in January. She said that I should keep an eye out for posted information in the student center when spring semester starts. I guess in February, there is going to be a progressive dinner, where all of the sororities are represented. She said that it's more informal. I also came across one of the sorority webpages and I emailed the girl who is in charge of recruitment. I told her that I'm interested in learning more about their sorority and sorority life in general and that I would love to talk to her about it to find out more. Was this a good move?

hey praisedancer,
it makes me feel so good hearing that you took my advice especially since im not in a sorority. I definitely think it was a good move because now the office of greek life has your contact information and will pass it on to the sororities. Emailing a certain sorority was also great on your part. Now hopefully she will reply with more information and maybe you two can set something up to meet. I was supposed to meet a girl yesterday but she ended up losing her drivers license and a credit card so she had to go get that settled. I think over the christmas break I will be meeting a few girls from a different sorority. Its glad to find yet another person who is going to be going through informal rush. Like yourself I dont know any girls "personally", just through email. What school do you go to by the way? I went to Baylor University my freshman year in waco, texas and now transferred to the university of houston. Well let us know what happens, and if she replies back to you. I need to get to work now, but have a great day!!

I agree, bucutie, it is really nice to find another person who is going through informal rush. I am so new to all of this and I need all the guidance I can get.
I have so many questions! I go to the University of Akron, in Ohio. It would be really nice to meet some of the girls over Winter Break, if possible. I would really feel more comfortable getting to know them a little before the recruitment events. That would take a lot of pressure off! There are two other sororities on my campus with their own webpages. Do you think that I should contact them too? If you would like to email me, my address is praisedancer5@aol.com

Hey Praisedancer.. I think you should try to contact all sororities if possible. Like i said earlier, if they dont have a web page then maybe the office of greek life could give you the rush chairman's phone number. I am glad that i can be of some help to you. I need to get ready to go to a party tonight so I will talk to you later, bye!

I went through Spring Rush earlier this year and I must say that it's a wonderful experience. Usually what we do here for spring recruitment is have rush tables out and we pass out flyers to girls in our campus center. After table rushing is done we'll have an open house where anyone who is interested is welcome to attend. Since it's now Christmas break, try and look on the internet at the sororities' websites, since many sororities have pages now. Email their rush chair (if possible) and let her know who you are and that you're interested, this will give the sororites a "heads up" and hopefully they'll remember you when you attend the rush parties. During the first week of school I suggest that maybe you can keep a look out for the sororites you are interested in.

The spring rushes are usually smaller in number when compared to fall rushes, but it doesn't mean that you'll miss out on anything from the Fall. I thought that spring rush was great because my pledge class of 4 had all these sisters doting on us!

Thank you so much for the advice, everyone. There are only 5 sororities at my school, so I emailed the 3 that have websites. About 2 1/2 weeks ago, a girl from one of them called while I wasn't home. She told my dad that she'd call me back, but she hasn't yet. I haven't heard from anyone else either. I know that it's break and all, so should I be expecting to hear from anyone at all? I am so anxious to hear from someone so I can learn more about spring recruitment and maybe get to know some of the girls. I just hate waiting. I have so many questions...

Cool

I went through Spring Rush...my school doesn't have Fall Rush, so that was my only option. With hindsight being 20/20, I don't think I would have rushed my first fall. Due to deferred rush, I was able to have a social life and interests completely independent from, yet complementary to, my Greek experience. Plus, I feel really close to my pledge class, a feeling I don't know if I would have had if my pledge class had 70 girls. Yay Spring Rush!

What sororities are on your campus Praisedancer?

If your campus is actively rushing, I would think you'd have the opportunity to rush and meet women soon. Just make sure you get all of the information you can.
