Question UF Pike banned?

I just saw that UF Pike was banned. While some of his comments were disrespectful, I still think that it is sad to ban him from the board. Granted, I am not a regular poster or anything, so I don't know everything that was said, etc. I still think his opinions are valid even if I don't agree with them.

He was banned! I'm kinda shocked. Maybe I don't know exactly what went down either because while he was certainly annoying I didn't think this was about to happen. Plus, things were a lot more entertaining with him around.

Oh well...

Yes UF_Pike was banned.

To the best of my knowledge he was banned for writing in a style that was offensive to women.

There is no hard and fast rule for banning and its not done very often. Meaning there is no set procedure. Its a very subjective process.

The most consistant criteria seems to be volume and stridency of complaints as well as their source.

So moderators and senior members tend to have more weight when calling for banning.

What usually happens is that some moderators will call for the banning of someone based on whether they believe that person's posts to be offensive to them, under the assumption that if those posters are offensive to them, and they want that person banned, a significant amount of others must also find that person offensive and must likewise want them banned.

Ultimate power in banning rests with John, the moderator of the site, however John is very busy and usually goes with the recomendation of the moderators.

So I hope I shed a little light on the banning process. Any questions?

Well I've never met anyone with a larger ego... Or at least one that becomes very inflated when they are anonymously on the internet

Anyhow.. It was entertaining!

James, not to wheedle in your Wheaties, but it was not only offensive to the Ladys of GC but some of the He Man Guys also!

I found the language and treminology very offensive!

While I an by no means an Angle, there are certain rules to be on a site by.

We are all or most having a good time on this Site and Try to help each other out if there is a question.

Yes the Moderators can ask John H to Ban an individual from the Site, but we as Moderators can Delete a threard on the site that we have a resonsability for!

If a Group has no Moderator, then one can ask John to be one and they then can inturn police that thread for any unwaywards.

I am sure John takes his task of Banning someone very carefully! We as Mods are his eyes and ears for trouble makers. I do not check everyones threads and find out only through the Mod Corner. This we way we can then check it and give our honest opinion.

I e-m UF_Pike several times trying to get him to tone his crap down! Did It Work ??? A resonding NO, ergo He is history!

It is not anyone Mods Fault but his alone for his shoddy behavior!

Cool

Before y'all begin to think that moderators are bad people...let me address a few things:

Dionysus, don't even THINK about it.

Oh and James, you know that wasn't the only reason why he was banned.

Banning a member is not an overnight decision. After repeated requests from his own 'brothers', UF_Pike decided not to tone it down. Getting a warning from John Hammell is indeed a serious thing, but did he pay any attention to it? NO. He was given a chance to shape up but it's obvious that he had better things in mind.

I hope this thread doesn't turn into a 'crying foul' thread to slam on the moderators because NONE of the moderators have the ability to ban members as the duty rests with John.

You won't see me crying about this anytime soon.

I for one take the position of a Moderator very seriously!

When one stops to think, it has a big resposibility behind it!

I must say I find hoosier more annoying then UF Pike. Then again we are all entitled to our opinions.

Can we ban hoosier?

Editing this with a few faces... because I was joking... Though, I think if people are going to post they should post their opinions. And if they take the hoosier route, then they should post a few positive greek stories, because there are plenty. Unlike, hoosier, who seems to only go through and post negative stories.

Some people feel that UF_Pike's posts are offensive. I think hoosier's posts are offensive. Mostly because he does not give his opinion and is very one sided. Reminds me of Katie Couric or CNN.

tarnishing my reputation, but...

Ok, here I go tarnishing my reputation on here, but I feel it needs to be said simply because it's my opinion and that's what everything on here is based on, opinion.

Banning UF_Pike from this board is ridiculous. We all have people on here that cause a stir in all of us or that we just feel are inappropriate, now granted not to the extent that he was, but still, we all have those people. So what do adults do? They ignore what offends them. Therefore, I ignore the people I find obnoxious and do not respond to their comments. Telling on someone and having them banned from a public message board where we ALL state our opinions is completely uncalled for. We definitely DO NOT AGREE with many of the things he said, but I don't agree with many things said on here and the bottom line is knowing him better than the rest of ya'll...he is a decent guy, he is a smart ass, but to find the humor in the things he says, you kind of have to know him. And obviously he's someone that made enough of an impression on ya'll to warrant the many responses to him. And as I said to a Phi Mu sister of mine on here, my organization taught me not to judge people before I know them, therefore, I chose to get to know him before writing him off as an ass. Thank the Lord I did because he's honestly a hilarious man, on and off the board. It's absurd that people on here would rather get rid of someone that rocks the boat than respect his opinions and statements, whether they offend you or not. Like it or not he really is a Pike and really is greek...just like the rest of us...though I do in some ways think he's a little more mature than the rest of us on here who told on him to get the spotlight back on themselves.

Shame on you. Grow up! And if you think I'm full of shit from now on fine, but at least I know that I did the proper thing as a greek would do and knew the person instead of their internet horseshat.

Banning is a long process and John takes every moderator's opinion and concern into his decision. He also takes his own opinions into account. John had read through some of UF Pike's posts and found them offensive. John made the ultimate decision to ban him.
There have been numerous time where moderator's have asked for someone to be banned and John thought that it wasn't necessary. John carefully reads through the accused's posts and makes an intelligent and well thought-out decision on whether the person should stay or not.

NO NO on Hoosier! What is the Problem here?

Hoosier Tells it like it is as does Delta Alum and My self, James, Lenoxx. and others!

We may not like to hear the truth, but if it happened, then it is the Truth!

DA and Hoosier Report onloy what they get from other Sites and Threads!

Is there a problem with the Truth?

While I may not agree, if it is the truth then why try to Ban someone for telling it?

He has been a help to KTSNAKE and Myself and Neither of us are members of his Fraternity! That Is What Fraternalism is about!

Tell me Why You want us to ban him again?

Be more specific. Is he a Perfect AssWhole, Does He use specifally Offensive Language?

Has to be more than this!

Are You an Ex Wife?

Give More Info, being banned is not taken lightly!

I COMPLETELY AGREE. I am not a UF_Pike Cheerleader or anything, but y'all are just as guilty as he is. He came on GC SOLELY to stir the pot, and with each response, you all fed into that. If you didn't like what UF_Pike had to say, you didn't have to respond. In fact, some of the responses to his posts were downright inflammatory.

Most of you took the opportunity to bash the pic he put up about being a stud, trying to justify your words by saying he deserved it. Not ONCE did UF_Pike go into the actual picture thread and post any disparaging remarks about any of you.

If you didn't agree with him, that is fine. But when his posts were blantantly meant to be attention-grabbers, the best thing to do would have been to ignore him.

The bottom line is, as Moderators, you all DO have some say-so in a member's getting banned. You said it yourself, people must complain repeatedly to John H. Don't try to absolve yourselves of responsibility because people are questioning your decision.

At the end of the day, it really does not affect me one way or the other...I am still here to post. I just think that the sensitivity of some people is, to use a Tom Earp word, UNDERWHELMING.
