ASP-PSU closed after booze party

5/29/02

PSU frat shut down

PLATTSBURGH — Because of violations of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity’s risk-management policy, the Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi at Plattsburgh State has been closed.

This action was initiated May 16 by the national organization and supported by Plattsburgh State.

Alpha Sigma Phi had been a member of the Greek community at the college since 1988 and has more than 200 initiated members from the Delta Xi chapter.

While the chapter had contributed over the years to the university and surrounding community, according to a news release from the fraternity headquarters, in recent years it had been under periodic suspension resulting from violations.

In May 2000, Alpha Sigma Phi had its recognition suspended as a result of extensive damage done to its fraternity house at 84 Broad St., near the intersection of Broad and Rugar streets.

The City of Plattsburgh building inspector declared the house uninhabitable and condemned it after fraternity members ransacked it inside and out.

Then, on Nov. 17 and 18, 2001, the fraternity hosted an open alcohol party, for which it collected money. Underage students were served alcohol, and one student was allegedly verbally and physically abused.

The fraternity pleaded "not responsible," according to Plattsburgh State spokesman Keith Tyo, but was found to have committed the violations.

Allison Swick-Duttine, Plattsburgh State’s coordinator of Greek affairs and leadership development, said in the news release: "The university and the national organization have worked together at length to assist these men in understanding set policies. Sometimes, even the best efforts are not successful.

"It’s unfortunate to lose a chapter from campus, but it’s in the best interest of the future of our fraternity/sorority community."

Alpha Sigma Phi Inc. Vice President Drew Thawley said the action taken by fraternity headquarters "reflects the organization’s prevailing commitment to be resolved in holding its chapters accountable to all policies — both its own and those of its host institutions."

Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity was founded at Yale in 1845. With a purpose rooted in the education, leadership development and improvement of young men, the fraternity strives to be an active proponent of alcohol education and risk management, the organization says.

More than 60 Alpha Sigma Phi groups exist on campuses throughout America.

seriously "hoosier" what is your deal? you are always posting negative publicity and I really don't understand your reasoning. Do you think you are going to convince Greeks that we are terrible people and we should all drop out of our GLO's? I doubt it...you obviously have nothing better to do than dig up dirt about frats and sororities...i feel sorry for people like you..get a life

Actually, at first, many of us believed that that was his purpose on GC--to make Greeks look bad.

Most of his posts are reports I get from the Fraternal News server, so it isn't that he's digging up dirt. I don't believe his purpose is to make us feel bad. We need to be mindful of the mistakes our fellow Greeks make...so that we don't go and turn around and make the same mistakes...

While I understand we are all entitled to our own opinions, please refrain from telling others to "get a life". There are other constructive and more polite ways to say "I don't agree with what you're saying...".

Sorry DZ,

I don't know what Hoosier's motive might be, but I think it is absolutely vital that chapter closings and the reasons for them are shared.

Perhaps it should be in the Risk Management section, but then so should the the Alfred University thread in that case.

We are losing chapters in alarming numbers and it does not bode well for the future of Greek Letter Organizations. We have lots of problems that simply can't be ignored.

But then, we've had this discussion before.

I don't think our members want to get in trouble, get suspended, or get their charter revoked, but innocent stuff (often fueled by booze) turns into trouble.

Take that DU paddling picture: a member and his now initiated little brother challenge each other. Someone takes a picture, and emails it to a friend, and eventually it goes public and to the dean. It's bye-bye charter.

The people who read and post here - in general - aren't likely to learn to avoid charter-revoking stuff, but perhaps a little bit will filter down via the good Greeks and adult advisors who are GC participants. I hope my posts will in some way help improve the GLO system.

Julie (DZ) I cannot remember your total alias but unless you Know Hoosier then I think you are wrong, wrong!

I think he is pointing out along with DeltaAlum some of the dumb and sad things that happen in our circle of the Greek World!

He is not picking on anyone Org. so he is reporting to us what is going on in the real world!

Let me tell you something, He is a member of a Fraternity, not mine, who had some information that he found for recruituting and house building from another Fraternity and passed it along to a member of another Fraternity who in turn copied it and sent to me !!!!!! It was nothing secret but it helped 2 other Fraternitys get some ideas and this was from the expense of both of these InterFraternal Brothers!

So you see, there were not just Brothers helping each other but Members of several Greek Orgs helping each other out!

What have you done lately to help out another Greek Org???

Just what do you think this site is for?

We are all concerned about each other no matter what Org We belong to!

I know I talk personally on the phone to members from AGD, TKE, SN, and of course LXA. It is my nickle when I do the calling and we all try to help each other!

We as Greeks whether GLO, BGLO, or MGLO are the minority on our respective Campuses!

So there You have ist Sports Fans! It was a good game MOM but we lost!

I agree! The only way for us to stop the negative publicity and the negative stereotypes about Greeks is for us to collectively raise our own awareness of these stupid actions and to work togrether to stop them from occuring in the first place. Otherwise, how much longer will we be able to say that all US Presidents except 2 are Greek, 85% of Congress is greek, etc.

Thank you, DeltAlum! While I do like to hear about all of the positive aspects of Greek Life, let's face it...we have our share of problems also. Sometimes, we need to be reminded that our actions can be detremential not only to our fellow Greek brothers and sisters, but also to other members of the college community. When I read stories like this, it empowers me to make my group better, so that this doesn't happen to my chapter. I hope that others look at it as a way to say, "...this WILL NOT happen to MY Fraternity/Sorority!".
