hazing over egg rolls?

So I was out at lunch today at a popular local chinese buffet style restaurant and I saw a group of XYZ fraternity men - some of which I knew from local hangouts my friends and I frequent.

Anyway, my friend James and I were in line to get some stuff and there was 2 members of XYZ fraternity on the other side talking about hazing. To sum it up the conversation included "That guy deserves to be hazed" and "Dude if he was in my class we would have hazed him until he cried like a baby" - among other things - and I was shocked to say the least that 2 guys would be openly talking about hazing and how they practice it and how funny it is. The guy I was (who is not Greek)with made some comment like "Isnt it cool to be a frat guy and haze all your friends". I told him to shut up, but spend the entire lunch thinking about how my friend now has an even worse opinion about Greeks.

Question: have you ever been in this kind of situation before and should I have said something to the guys?

As far as your friend's perception of all 'frat guys' if he thinks a couple of winners like these kids at the restaurant are representative of us all then he's very wrong.

So far as these folks go I wouldn't personally have advocated you do anything in this situation. Nowadays a chapter hazing has two choices -- stop hazing or EVENTUALLY they will get caught and that charter on their wall will be gone.

From the sound of the conversation it sounds like their chapter is actually taking some action against hazing. Sounds like a few older members talking about the "good 'ol days". Tough to act on something like that without knowing the whole story.

sounds like your friend their is a real winner, I bet he's real open minded on other subjects. If I was you, I wouldn't care what others think, that's how you let them win. I've been in that situation many times, the best thing to do is shrug it off because it's not you. People are always going to look for reasons to believe what they want to believe. If it bothers you that much, maybe you should go talk to the XYZ boys about it.
