Greek Alcohol Study
For those who think Greeks don't care...from the AGD IHQ public site..
ALPHA GAMMA DELTA HELPS FUND ALCOHOL STUDY
Once again, Alpha Gamma Delta is leading the way to a brighter future. Alpha Gamma Delta is one of 14 Greek organizations taking part in a new study determined to find solutions to college-aged drinking problems.
The Center for Alcohol and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has announced that it has obtained funding for a two-phase project to seek solutions to the collegiate drinking problems and to formulate policies that will help colleges and undergraduate organizations address underage alcohol abuse.
The project was suggested by James Emison, a trustee of DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, who believed that the value of the recent research reports on college-age drinking identified problems, but offered college officials and boards of trustees little guidance on solutions. Emison asked CASA to develop a means of finding what programs are being used across the country, to ask for any measures of success and to identify best practices for adoption by colleges and universities.
Pilot funding was given by DePauw University. Emison asked another DePauw alumnus, Norval Stephens, Chairman of the Delta Tau Delta Educational Foundation to determine if fraternities and sororities would join the effort.
“With the exception of welcome support from DePauw University and the University of California, Irvine, other universities we contacted were facing deficits and cutbacks and could not participate,” Emison said. “But the response from the Greek world was exceptional and is still coming in. I sense the fraternities and sororities want to join with college administrations to be part of the solution, not just part of the problem,” he added.
Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Gamma Delta, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma are women's fraternities sponsoring the project. Among the men's fraternities are Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Psi.
CASA has proposed a two-phase effort. Phase One will be a national reconnaissance of college programs and policies. Phase Two will be a working symposium of stakeholders, including college administrators, public health officials, experts on alcohol dependence and college undergraduate organizations, including the fraternities and sororities, to examine the Phase One research and recommend policies and best practices.
Joseph A. Califano, Jr., Chairman and President of CASA, stated “We are proud to be chosen to lead this extraordinary effort to aid the entire college world to seek better means of attacking a cultural issue, to understand its dimensions, to catalog the best practices in the field and then to convene a landmark symposium to recommend policies and procedures to address the problem of college-age alcohol abuse.” He announced that Susan E. Foster, Vice-President and Director of Policy Research and Analysis, would lead the team from CASA.

Thank you to all. This is wonderful news and badly needed.

This is odd - it's a CU study, yet the Greek community here knows nothing about it. Where's the PR? Whoever's involved in this, email spectator@columbia.edu and tell them about this story!

Good for them. The only probelm is the piece is written too much like a PR statement for non-greeks to take it seriously.
