Post How should GLO's imrove their images with the communties?

How should GLO's improve their images with the communties? My personal opinon in do many local charity work and try to get it in the local paper. Also maybe listening to the publics concern and tring to compromise on problems they may have.

Almost all the houses participate in local community service events. I know Theta volunteers it's girls on a monthly basis to causes in our county, most recently volunteering for a Hearst Castle Tea, where we were mentioned in the paper. Most importantly, we can improve our image by acting like adults in our community, and not drunken fools throwing out of hand parties. Image is about how you conduct YOURSELF when you are in public, if you display a good image, greeks will benefit as a whole. If we continue to uphold the strerotypes of greeks, we will never get anywhere.

I agree that GLO's should do LOCAL community service - especially in small towns. It is hard to explain to townspeople who don't have a lot of $$$ to donate anyway that you are sending it to someplace they never heard of 10 states away. I would say, keep the fundraising for your national philanthropy on campus (with events like Derby Daze or Anchor Splash). The community will be a lot more impressed if you do things like a clothing drive for the local women's shelter or babysitting people's kids while they're trying to get their GED.

Oh, and PATRONIZE THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES ON A REGULAR BASIS. Don't just hop in your car and go to Wal-Mart or the strip mall - support the people who have been there and part of the community for umpteen years. (Heck, this goes for everyone, not just collegiate Greeks.)

I can FINALLY get back into Greek Life. Ahhhh, deep sigh of relief.

Isn't it sad that we can haul ourselves out of bed early nearly every weekend make positive contributions to our communities and raise $XXX for charities, but the "independent" (and you all know what I mean when I say that ) world hears of one isolated incident and labels us as one big fat expensive party? Take Southeast's campus, for example-2001 Greek Week chose Cape Girardeau United Way and Big Brothers/Big Sisters as its beneficiaries, in addition to the Family Fun Fair, Special Olympics, and blood drive that are tradition. (The entire community knows that none of these events could possibly take place without the Greeks). The representatives from United Way and BB/BS said that we raised more in one week than they are able to solicit from ALL the business in Cape during the WHOLE YEAR! This was published in the city paper and broadcast on the news.

I just wish that they could see how much more per capita work we do than the independent students on campus. If I were a betting woman, I'd say that the majority of the alcohol violations on our (dry) campus are the work of non-affiliateds. We as Greeks have a certain sense of honor to uphold for our organizations and see that there is much more to college life than partying.

Not only does Lambda Chi Alpha International have the largest food drives, each chapter does its own thing.
At Pitt. St. U in Kansas, we have a tub-a-thon with a Soroity each yeart and for the last 2 yrs, we donated $3,600 dollars to the Ron Mac House. We also have Western Week whe gather food for the local charity. I know some of the chapters do a Watermelon Festor bust.
Yep world do not give the Greeks Credit as we do it anyway as that is the way we are!!!!!!

Community Service and volunteering time. I have always thought that by doing something good, your chapter will be remembered by those you have helped.

I also agree with 33girl about supporting local buisinesses. It is too easy to go to wal mart or something like that. There really is no sense of community from going to a bigger store.

Go out of your way to do stuff for other people. I coach soccer for high school age kids. Every time I get the chance, or they ask, I tell them how much I love my sorority, and how there are so many stereotypes out there... I'm living proof that not all sorority girls are beautiful, sex-loving, alcohol-bingeing, college-age wastelands. Some of them even plan to rush, judging by what I've said. Little things like that make a difference.

Cool

Don't forget your college community. Everyone has mentioned what you do within the community, but people also take notice of events on campus.
You can also involve the community on campus. For your next service project, increase the size. Call up a local paper and let them know you are doing the project and welcome volunteers from the community. Or you can call up a specific group (after-school program, church group, etc.) and invite them to join you. Not only are you involving the community, you are doing soemthing worthwhile for someone else!
Just my 2 cents worth!
