West Georgia National Div. II Cheerleadering Champs!
I hope I got the title right!! I happened to be surfing and found the competition on ESPN.
My alma mater, the State Univ of West Georgia just got 1st place. Delta State (Miss?) was 2nd. and Columbus College (another GA) got 3rd.
My niece (and Carnation's daughters) is down at WDWorld this weekend for the h.s. competion. Sooo proud of everyone!!

funny you should post something about that because i was JUST watching the same thing! Although, a couple of weeks back, i saw a cheerleading competition on the same channel and the winners all sounded very familiar so i dont think its recent, probably a rerun

Justamom--do you mean you think Lynn and I are relatives? Lynn has a niece at nationals and and I have 2 daughters..but they aren't the same people! Lynn and I just met last month at Atlanta GC!
So far my only relatives on GC are ASLFRose and Ballerina...but there's hope in the future!

The Cheer Squad at the high school my son attends has been Colorado State Champions probably six of the last eight years and have gone to WDW to compete.
I think last year was their best finish -- 6th or 8th. I think they were about 12th this year.
One of our daughters started out as a Cheerleader but decided she would rather be on the volleyball team.
I would have been hard pressed to believe how hard the Cheers work -- including all the gymnastics, etc. The team used to be considered an extraciricular activity, but was moved into the Athletic Department a few years ago and is considered a full sport at our school these days.
Congratulations to all, it's a really impressive accomplishment.

My squad was on this past weekend, we're Division I though. We practiced with West Georgia though in January while we were in Orlando for nationals, since their coach, Sherry, is the former coach at my school, George Mason University.
We got 4th in our division (we had a few drops). Morehead State won our division like they usually do.

As a West Ga. alum I am very PROUD of our Cheerleaders!!! They have really bounced back from some adversity over the last several years.
I think it was back in 1996 or 1997 that the West Ga. cheerleaders were involved in a horrific automobile crash while on their way to a competition. Two cheerleaders and the coach were killed, and several others were badly injured.
After a bit of regrouping, the squad began competiting again just three years ago. In 2000, they placed 5th in the nation; in 2001 they placed 3rd in the nation; and this year they are NATIONAL CHAMPS!!
I believe there are two remaining cheerleaders remaining that were involved in the crash, so it is a testiment to their dedication and resolve.
On the Greek side - there are two Pikes from my chapter on the squad; a Kappa Sig; a couple of Pi Kappa Phis; several Chi Omegas; a few Phi Mus; and I think a Tri-Delt.
Not only did the co-ed squad win the National Championship, but the all-female squad won THIRD in the nation in that squad's first year of competiting.
It's a real shame that UWG doesn't classify cheerleading as a varsity sport, and these dedicated and talented cheerleaders do not receive any sort of scholarships or funding.
At any rate: CONGRATULATIONS to our CHEERLEADERS!!!
