Cool charter

ok, i have a quick question about the whole charter things after reading Josh's post... what exactly happens if your charter gets pulled? do you need to move out or can you just not participate in activities? I don't know if any of this is confidential, so if it is I'm sorry, I'm just curious

Your chapter is closed, defunct, goodbye. Members become alums. Depending on who owns the house, either the fraternity/corp board must sell it, or the university takes it away. (They may be able to remain in the house until the end of the year depending.)

In addition to what Fuzzie Alum wrote, the college doesn't recognize the organization anymore so the org. cannot participate in campus activities. Sometimes the Headquarters will maintain ownership of the house and lease it to another org. in hopes that they will recolonize in the future.

Just to elaborate on what Fuzzie said, sometimes members of the group do not become alumni, depending on what the situation is that the charter was pulled for. For instance, in a numbers situation, most times the brothers/sisters will be given alumni status. On the other hand, we had many a national fraternity on campus who had their charters pulled for hazing, alcohol infractions (major ones), and other such problems, and they were not made alumni. They just weren't brothers anymore.

Also, if the house is not owned by the university or a housing corp, the landlord might not give a rat's ass if your charter is pulled or not, and you can keep living there forever. Especially if you have been good tenants.

Sometimes the school might derecognize but the national org might not, which means you still have your charter, or the national org might take the charter, but the school might say "they're a-holes...change your name and carry on." It's not always a black & white issue. Every situation is different.
