Sorority "uniforms" - clothes, shoes, etc. - help people recognize "sorority girls""
I hope these student paper stories / columns (below) are universally taken to be jokes or “all in good fun” pieces. But some people, maybe even PNMs, may, sadly enough, take them as gospel.
At any rate, the stories might irritate some NPC officers, volunteers, actives, advisors, etc. because they do emphasize apparel and appearance. And they imply a kind of cookie-cutter look. Not necessarily the chief message most NPC sororities want to publicize – right?
Wake Forest: Sorority Women’s Shoes
http://oldgoldandblack.com/?p=43308
UGA: Tops, shorts, leggings, and more
http://www.redandblack.com/views/sou...310ee8509.html
including this statement: “Any divergence from the typical sorority girl uniform raises alarm and suspicion.” (The author of ^^ says she’s a sorority member.)
Edited to add: The NPC site has statements about what sorority life is and what it is not
http://www.thesororitylife.com/The-Real-Deal/index.aspx
High on the “not” list is:
“ A place that puts your looks and wardrobe ahead of your values and personality”

UGA story link not working. Found the story.
Well, that's 3 minutes of my life that could have been better spent doing ANYTHING else.

I thought the Wake article was cute. The girl who takes that as anything beyond a silly essay has no place in, well, college.

The only good thing about that article was finding out that college kids still use the term shacker. Other than that, she should probably find a different major.
Every college population and every subset within a college population has their own fashion (I should probably say "fashion") things that they do. It's not something you will get kicked out of your group for not following or anything sinister or serious. Allure even had a feature a few years ago about how women who hang out together start dressing like each other. It's like when women who live together are on the same cycle.
Heck it was a LOT worse when there was no internet shopping and only a few college age friendly stores to choose from in a small town. You had to get used to showing up at a party with 6 other girls wearing the same shirt.

And just in time, I guess, there's a story / article making the Internetrounds about what one source's posting calls
"a truly delightful and entirely unhinged email we received from an anonymous tipster, which outlines the appearance guidelines for the women of the Alpha Chi Omega chapter at University of Southern California."

Essentially the same story is also at

Jezebel posts article criticizing sorority women with incorrect terminology!
In other words, Pope Francis is Catholic!
Water is wet!
Eta: Bustle is even more idiotic as they seem to not understand these are guidelines for a specific event.

In the 1980's, I can remember a friend showing me her list of "Do's & Don't's" from her NPC sorority (rather not say the group or campus).
The items that stood out were:
* NO brushing or combing your hair in public
* NO smoking in public (whether on campus, restaurant or fraternity house)
* NO putting on lipstick in public. Go to the bathroom & put it on in front of a mirror.
Thought these were odd, even for the time. The list didn't have a title like "Miss Manners" of suggestions, it definitely stated her GLO.
There were several other Do's & Don't's (like a list of 25). These 3 just stood out the most that I remembered them.

What no Lilly Pulitzer mentioned in these articles? LOL
To the snarky commenters below the Jezebel article, what's wrong with wanting to look your best? I bet those people didn't show up to their job interviews with tangled hair dyed purple. lol

Another one of those 25 would have been to "Never drink beer from a bottle or can, always request a glass."
