Special GLO Houses

Have any of you seen Greek houses that have special features or that you just love for some reason?

I really like the Tri Delt house at Arkansas--it's stone with these dark pine trees around it. The Tri Delt house at Bama is neat too--they call it "The Showboat" or "The Birthday Cake"--it kind of looks like both! The Chi O house at Bama is gorgeous New Orleans style and the Chi O who showed us around said that there were secrets in the cast iron railing.

The TKE house at University of North Dakota has a hot tub.
Pretty cool even in the winter months.

The Beta house at Kansas was once owned by the Secretary of State (i think it was of state) under Abraham Lincoln.

The house here at Nebraska, has one unique characteristic, but I'm not at liberty to discuss it...sorry

Oh and the Phi Delt house here also is on the national registry of architectural (sp?) land marks b/c it has a glass enclosed spiral staircase on the corner of their house (wow I didn't explain that very well at all...) that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (a well known Phi Delt, I've heard that he did a lot of designs for Phi Delt houses all across the country...)

Our Sigma Kappa house here has a beautiful spiral staircase that goes up 3 flights (we were always told that almost all Sigma Kappa houses have spiral staircases, but I don't know if it's true...) The Mu chapter house at UW looks like a stone castle (hence it's nickname, "the castle") I know that our ADPi house and the Pi Phi house here have a tunnel that run under the parking lots and connect the two, but I think that it has been sealed off for years...
I also know that at the ADPi house, they have a "rock room" which is literally a room with a big rock as high as the ceiling when you open the door.. They don't know why, but it's just always been like that...

This isn't as cool as a pool or tunnel, but our house is the only one of the greek houses(19 sororities, 23 fraternitites) on campus with an elevator! Our house was built last year and there is a new policy that a new house must have an elevator. During recruitment last year, lots of girls asked about our house! Saying that they heard we have an Olympic size pool inside and other random things! It was fun to hear those!

The Beta house at Kettering University, Michigan (Formerly GMI) actually is two chapters within one. When the two schools merged 'back in the day', the two chapters came together...somewhat. First semester the A-Chapter gets to live in the house and then second semester the B-Chapter gets the house. It is pretty unique, they actually rush seperate too. That chapter also owns a bus for them to get around in.

Other than that, I know that a lot of older Beta houses were used for housing during the wars.

DG's house at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is absolutely the most gorgeous house I've ever seen. Rock on Delta Gams! You're all superstars!

My friend is a Phi Sigma Kappa at Cornell University, and he told me their house is shaped like a Gamma, because they are the Gamma chapter.

Can you explain how this works?? Wouldn't the national org. want them to merge?

I've heard and seen pictures that the Tri-Delt house at U.S.C. is huge, something like the biggest sororiety house on the West coast. Pretty amazing if you ask me, because we don't have houses down here in lovely San Diego.

Hey Optimist Prime and -zz-kai!

I am a native of Flint and my husband was a Lambda Chi Alpha from Kettering University/GMI so I can shed a little light on your question. The school did not merge! It changed names because it wasn't really affiliated with just GM anymore. It used to be called General Motors Institute (GMI). Flint used to be primarily a GM factory town and GM was a big supporter of this school. There used to be a lot of factories across the street and next door to the school but a lot of them have been torn down. Anyway, you can trust me on this stuff because my great-grandfather was a professor there back in the day, my great-uncle was a student there back in the day, and my grandmother also worked at the school. I used to live on DuPont Street across from the Academic Building and my great-grandparents small farm/huge garden (whatever you want to call it) used to be where their baseball/soccer fields are now located.

GMI/Kettering is a Engineering & Managment co-op school. ALL students are either enrolled in A section or B section. A section students go to school January, February, March, July, August, and September. B section students go to school April, May, June, October, November, and December. They go to school for three months then they go to their co-op job for three months. There is no exceptions, a certain number of co-op terms/semesters are required for graduation. So while one section is away at work the other section in school lives in the house. All of the houses are this way. I'm pretty sure that all of the houses only have one charter but their nationals recognize the sections separately by their chapter name and either an A or B after them. I know for a fact that Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Tau Delta are recognized this way.

Usually it is referred to as Kettering/GMI because the students that entered before the name change receive two different diplomas at graduation, one from General Motors Institute and one from Kettering University. So my husband has two degrees sitting on top of our entertainment center. Most people around Flint still call it GMI.
