Canadian Sorority Recruitment

I'm considering joining formal recruitment in the fall, and I have a quite a few questions about recruitment in Canada vs recruitment in the states. I have searched and combed through GreekChat, but most of the posts are from 2009 and earlier. So I was wondering if recruitment style has changed. Here are a few of my main questions:

1. Are recommendation letters necessary at any Canadian schools?
2. Is recruitment fashion the same as in the states?
3. What was it like rushing a Canadian sorority
4. What exactly is GreekRank. And is it accurate.

In relation to question 4, I am keeping a very open mind to all the sororities, but I am researching so I can get a feel for how the greeks of the community treat each other. Is Greekrank an accurate place?

Thank you very much for any insight you can give

Now this is a fresh subject! Thanks for asking!
1. Recs being required are according to the sorority, not the school. My sorority requires them. I can't speak for others. However, it's going to be harder for a Canadian to find recs because there are not nearly as many sorority alumnae in Canada.
2. No clue! I'm sorry! But check the chapter websites...that should give you an idea.
3. Again, no idea, but I'm very interested to find out. What you need is somebody who's done both, and that person may not be on this board. We may, however, have some alumnae who have advised at both.
4. Greekrank is what you would expect any site that allows random, anonymous posting to be: full of hateful, stupid comments that are complete fantasy. There might be a few nuggets of truth in there, but you'll have to look long and hard to find them.
Best of luck to you!

Here's the info regarding the chapters on campus and recruitment result (last year) from Irishpipe's fabulous recruitment thread. I've edited it slightly. Please don't make judgments about the chapters without meeting them in person on campus. Never base your judgments on just meeting one of the members. Get to know them before you decide.

Thank you AnchorAlumna and MaryPoppins
I will inquire about the rec letters from the individual sororities then. And I'll try my hardest to find an alum from my school. If I get into a sorority, I hope I can help other girls in my position. I'll also stop looking at greekrank, I'm kinda scared it will sway my judgement.

And they don't have to be from alums that went to your school. They could have attended any school where their group has a chapter.

Also, it's going to vary a lot by which University you attend. Even among the Canadian chapters I've worked with, the recruitment styles vary significantly. Western Ontario is very different from Dalhousie which is very different than Calgary. The one common factor is that Greekrank is NOT an accurate place.

Check the Panhellenic website at your school - they often have a lot of great info on recruitment in Canada. In general, it's more laid back than US schools.
Last I checked (I almost transferred to U of T for my sophomore year and before becoming a sorority member) the sororities are not officially recognized at U of T...but here is the Panhel website http://www.uoftsororities.com/

Aw man. When I first saw the OPs post I thought she was going to rush in Texas. I was interested in how a Canadian would fare in the land of longhorns.

U of T is a phenomenal university in a great city. My cousin graduated from there and a neice currently attends. Once you have been through recruitment, do please return and post a story of your experience. GC readers would love to hear about a Canadian recruitment. (And ditto on the cool houses -- very apropos for Toronto)

Thank you so much to all the people who welcomed me and gave me advice. I will be avoiding greekrank.com because i see now how malicious, mean and probably false many of the comments are. Thank you for that advice .
@SoCalGirl, That would be very interesting. Maybe one day we'll get to see that aha

My school is UofT, which leads me to my next question. Am I very recognizable based on my posts on greekchat? I strive to keep a squeaky clean online footprint so I'm not worried about that, but also, how important is your online behaviour to a sorority during recruitment. Could it make or break you?

I didn't know you were from U of T (then again, I didn't read your other threads). Honestly, if you are just asking questions like you are know, I would say you are grand! Those of us in organisations at Canadian schools understand it is quite difficult to get any information, so they aren't going to hold it against you I'm assuming your other social networking sites are normal/not alarming

Yes, I keep very normal/ not alarming social network accounts. I volunteer quite frequently, so I make sure to keep it all my accounts and profiles as if my future employer or volunteer supervisor is looking at it aha.
Another question I have is related to my volunteer work. Would this be a benefit to me even if it's not for the philanthropy the sorority advocates for? Would it be not so great to talk about my volunteering past during recruitment if it's not for the philanthropy of that sorority? I think it would be alright, but I'm just checking.
