Do You Believe in Feng Shui
Hi, just wondering if any of you believe in Feng Shui, i.e a mirror should never be left facing a bed. How true is this? Please share your personal views.

I don't know if this counts or not but I have been a huge fan of re-arranging furniture - ever since I was 11-12 years old. I always felt better about life once I changed a room around. Weird- I know!! And even if I arrange a room one way... a day or two later, especially the bedroom... if I am not sleeping good- I'll re-arrange again and sleep much better. I drive my husband crazy but he puts up with it as long as I don't scratch the floors doing it!

I totally believe the mirror/bed thing...
My mom, who is quite spiritual, said its believed that our spirits sort of "roam" free of our bodies at night sometimes, and if the spirit sits up and sees the mirror, it can cause it/US quite a scare.
Why I believe this--
Before I even knew about this I was living in an apt with mirrored closet doors at the end of my bed. I had recurring, horrible nightmares almost every night-- and I wake up from them with a jolt, as if I had been startled--and so when I found out about the mirror thing, I started to think maybe I was startling myself with the reflection in the mirror--wheter it was my spirit, or I was sitting up half awake/sleepwalking, whatever--obviously SOMETHING was scaring me almost everynight.
So when I moved to the place I am living in now, no mirrored doors and I have my mirror not facing the bed in any way shape or form and I have not had those nightmares ever again.
I've heard too that it is good to put a mirror above your stove...something about neutralizing the fire element there.

I do practice the basics of feng shui in my home. I have a tabletop fountain the the SE corner, windchimes between dueling doors, and the walls are painted in auspicious colors. Years before I had even heard of feng shui, when I first moved in my house, my bed shared a wall with the toilet, and was not opposite the door. I absolutely hated it. I felt uneasy every time I walked in the bedroom. After I rearranged the furniture I felt so much better. I almost don't want to say this, but I have always hated sitting in front of any type of projecting corners. Whether it's from a table, a wall or whatever. I always thought it was just me, but apparently, it isn't.

Sorry,
I mean doors that face each other.
Auspicious colors for living areas are lively (yang) colors like red, yellow and purple. Auspicious colors for bedrooms are serene (yin) colors like blue, green and beige. I think purple is yin too.

..can be useful when you are in a bad mood. You can
just flush it down the toilet.
Don't you remember the lyrics,
"I want to wash that girl right out of my hair."
What mopre proof do you want??

My theory is that if Feng Shui (while giving some beautiful design elements) really worked, China would have found a way to arrange things to get out from under its opressive communist rule.
Just a thought...

I don't know much about Feng Shui, but I figure it can't hurt. Maybe I'll give it a try when I redecorate. I've always wanted a purple room.

I don't know much about Feng Shui, but even before I had heard of it I had read of studies regarding colors affecting moods. (Mauve is supposed to make you passive, yellow is used most often in psychiatric hospitals, too much blue will make you depressed, etc.)
I don't know if I'm oversensitive to it or what, but for as long as I can remember I've always been aware of colors in rooms (and whether or not they were having a positive influence on me), and to a lesser extent, the location of furniture, etc. Although I like open space in general, there are certain ways rooms should be laid out that just "make sense" to me, even if I can't justify it to anyone else.
When I moved into my current apartment, I had stuff sort of arranged and was very unhappy with my living room. After 3-4 re-arranges (and driving my boyfriend crazy ) I finally found something I'm happy with. Whether it would fall in line with Feng Shui, I can't say. Maybe I should look it up

in response to the question about building a fourth tower: in most of china 4 is a very unlucky number. the word for four in mandarin sounds a lot like the word for death.
also juniorgrrl i don't think you should be making comments about china getting itself out of an oppressive regime until you've lived there. communism may suck but before communism the country was in chaos. the poverty in china is different than poverty here. its not exactly the easiest place to fight for reform or govern.
