Summer Involvement
Hey y'all, allow me to pose a question to you.
I notice with most of my canadian chapters and the other greeks on campus that when the school year ends, we fade away for the summer only to come back in the fall and spend a month to catch up to ourselves, we are trying to change this by holding mettings and more fun outdoor summer events, but it gets really hard cause we don't have a house we all can meet or crash at when we want to. I'm looking for ideas that have worked for you guys to keep the greek flavor going all summer long

Hey Ya
My chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha does not have a house either but to stay close during the summer the girls that are over 21 will go downtown to chill, and then all of us go to the movies and out to eat at least once a month. We also have pool parties and go up to the lake. Basically, we just take something that each one of us loves doing and go for it. I don't know if this helps, but the bonds will never break with greeks. ;-)

what we do is durring the year we plan and set dates for summer events, so everyone knows ahead a time, and can set the days aside. Depending on the event, if we are all not at a house, we all will stay with different sisters, and sometimes, we even get hotel rooms for some. We have all kinds of stuff in the summer, anything from BBQ's, camping trips, amusement park trips, and our usual meetings and stuff.
Hope some of this helps*

Flor, my AGD chapter doesn't have a house either!
In my chapter, we have many girls from the mainland who go home. In addition to that, some of our girls live on the Big Island and Maui and they'll occasionally go home on the weekends during the summer. During the summer, those of us left on the island will usually get together for birthdays, having barbecues at the beach or a pool, go out for dinner or just have a sleepover at someone's home.
Usually in mid-summer our chapter advisor will round us up for a philanthropy project. In past summers we helped out at the Art Academy and community fundraisers for Juvenile Diabetes. If we're lucky we're going to try and squeeze a car wash in to raise money for next semester.
Sometimes some sisters come back early or are here for a little while during the summer...I've opened my home to many of my sisters!
If at all possible, try to get together at least once a month (or even more!) with your brothers/sisters. It's not the same as during the school year, but that way you can all do what you need to do during the summer and still be with your Greek family.

Hey Zete,
Because most of our girls live in the Lower Mainland (Greater Vancouver) we have summer meetings once a month to keep up on everything. We also plan some events before the end of the school year so we are getting together at least a few times a month. Also a lot of our girls have parties during the summer and we also go away camping.

We always have a summer alumnae picnic, where actives and alums are invited for a day of fun and such. This way everyone gets to hang over the summer, and it ends up being a time where more alums can come hang out too. We do have a house, so we do it there, but you could do it at any park or grove.

Because our house was not "official", it didn't have to close during the summer, so it was always a good place to meet up. Only 11 girls could live in our house at the time, but you could be sure that there would always be somebody there to hang out with. Also, once a month, we met for a Rush Workshop, so the girls who lived out of town during the summer could catch up and talk about what we'd all been doing.

My chapter actually elects an officer solely responsible for setting up a programm for the semester break. It is made known to everybody before they take off and those who stay there or those who come into town during the break can take part in the activities - it works great!

I know of one Delt chapter (a big award winning one) where several guys stay at the house through summer vacation and hold rush events during Freshman orientations. It's not uncommon for them to pledge 30-35 men over the summer. Makes it a heck of a lot easier on them during formal rush.
I was invited to one, a very simple cookout dinner at the house. They pledged three really quality men that night alone.

We had a summer picnic also, not always at school but depending on who was going to be there at a state park that was nearer everyone. Also the sisters that lived near each other usually got together over the summer.
Also, there were usually several sisters at summer school or serving as freshman orientation leaders. We had very lax pre-rush contact rules so we could talk up the chapter all we wanted.

Our house always stays full over the summer, whether it be brothers taking classes or just staying at school to work. This summer we even have two sweethearts living in the house. Everyone always is stopping by the house, and we have a barbeque almost every weekend. I stopped by last night and there were 9 brothers on the front porch. We also spend the summer working on the house, fixing all those problems we kept putting off, and making improvements for next year. Summer session classes are great for rushing new members, since these guys are just dying to meet people before fall gets underway, and our current VP of New Membership got rushed during Summer Session, so it definitely pays off.
