Letterman?

Hey everyone! I have a question, or three haha. Last night I was hanging out with a Delta Upsilon guy who has asked me to talk to the colony about becoming my letterman. What is a letterman? I know it requires the sisterhood's approval, but I'm completely lost. And what do letterman/men do? I feel like there's some huge significance behind it that I don't understand yet.

Talk to your colony specialist (whatever it is that XO calls it). The first six weeks of a colony is busy putting together the bylaws to run your chapter...electing the first chapter sweetheart (whatever XO calls them) is not an urgent priority. Don't let a boy push you into doing things in your sorority. Why does he deserve that honor? BTW, there are many different ways that chapter decide to choose a "letterman". Sometimes it's a man who has done a lot for the chapter, often a member's boyfriend, sometimes the chapter will use the opportunity to hold a competition for charity. Either way, it's up to your chapter, not a random Delta Upsilon.

What is a letterman? I've never heard this term. My sorority, at least isn't allowed to have any men's auxilary groups or "sweetheart" type guy, and that may be the case for your sorority, too.

Kappa Delta calls them daggermen. They are fraternity men who have been chosen by the chapter to represent that particular chapter of Kappa Delta on their campus. Usually, it's a man that's done a lot for the chapter. I believe they can have 3 at any one time (could be 5). They are allowed to wear KD letters so in our organization it's a very big deal to appoint a daggerman. Some chapters participate in this tradition and some don't.

I don't know what this is....I even Googled it and and the only relevant thing that came up was this thread.

But what I really want to say is, your colony has been in existence for how long, a week? The dude needs to back off a little!

I thought this was going to be asking what fraternity David Letterman is in

And yeah, I would disqualify this dude from any sort of sweetheart-ish honor just from the fact that he ASKED to be one!!! Major faux pas!!

Unless your school's Greek system does that stupid thing where fraternities and sororities have unofficial bigs and littles between each other, I've never heard the term either.

Some Chi O chapters call the sweetheart (which are actually discouraged), "Hootie Man" or "The Omega Man". Big brother-type groups have been called "Wise Guys" or "Omega Men".
But, it's not like running for office. Guys shouldn't campaign for it.

Interesting. Well thank you for the insight - I've told him he needs to slow down and not assume anything, and I haven't bothered bringing it up. It did surprise me how quickly people jumped on this, as we have only existed a week. Thanks guys!

Yea...I'm not sure the situation you describe is national policy, but may be how your own chapter functioned. We had one, didn't have to be a fraternity man, and he didn't wear letters.

OP, you JUST colonized. Don't worry about some random guy who wants recognition. That's just odd.
