Some general questions about upperclassmen quotas

Florida State has an upperclassmen quota instituted for formal recruitment, and I will be rushing as a sophomore this fall so it will definitely be affecting me. However, I feel like I don't understand it that well. Does having an upperclassmen quota mean that every chapter on campus has to have so many upperclassmen in their fall pledge classes? Is it absolutely mandatory for every chapter to follow this rule?

Hmmm, there was one more question I was thinking of earlier but it seems to have slipped my mind... I will post it if I come up with it again.

No chapter has to take quota of any knid - freshman nor UC - at any campus. They are free to take as many as they match and as few as their nationals allow.

No, they do not have to use it.

It is there to allow them to take on a select number of upperclassmen without having them take up regular quota spaces that could go toward freshmen.

Ex: A school's freshman quota might be 70 with an upperclassman quota of like 5.

Using the same example, without UQ, if a chapter WANTED to take say 5 sophs/juniors, those 5 would take up freshman spots, leaving them with 65 spots left in quota instead of 70. UQ gives them room to take those 5 while still taking the 70 freshmen they want. Make sense?

So while they do not HAVE to use it, it is helpful to them in the event that there are some awesome sophs or juniors in the pool. They don't have to cut them based on "they'll take a slot from a freshman."

Additional note: Upperclassman quota covers different class standings depending on the school. Ex: For some, it's sophomores and juniors. For others, just juniors or just sophs.

We have a nice little sticky post about upperclassman quota:

You might find some answers there.

Please try not to be overly concerned with sorority logistics. You'll just stress yourself out even more! Focus on the things you can control: looking, feeling, and being your personal best; keeping an open mind to membership at the chapters that invite you back each day; and having great interviews with the chapters. Good luck! I'm not knocking your question; just wanted to put out there to focus on what you know you can do and not the nitty gritty technical details you have no power over.

I would definitely echo everything that adpiucf said! But, if you are like me and sometimes just have trouble letting go of the logistics, I will add this: I think Florida State is an example of a very successful implementation of UC quota. This will be the third year, and in the past two years all the NPC groups have really embraced it. It is true that they can opt out, but no one has done so in the past.

That does *not* mean that you are guaranteed a bid!!! But, you are at a campus that, at least on paper, does not appear to have a big anti-sophomore type of vibe.

Best of luck to you!!!
