I was really hoping to see Texas A&M on the list for colonizing!! What does "open for expansion" mean exactly?
I'm so proud to see all the recolonizing of old chapters!
Roses!!

First of all Sweetie, GO POKES! (Oklahoma State alum here!)

Open for expansion means that the Panhellenic Assocation on campus has voted to expand (add a sorority.). Once a campus is open, all groups not presently on campus can evaluate the situation, and if interested will submit packets of information to the Panhellenic at that school. Panhellenic (or a smaller committee) will review the submitted packets and choose a group of finalists - usually 3 or 4 groups - to make presentations. Panhellenic will attend the presentations and vote on which sorority to invite to colonize.

Usually expansion is considered when the groups on campus are too large, or perhaps many PNMs are dropping out of recruitment because they are unhappy with their remaining choices in recruitment (they would rather not be greek than pledge certain groups.) A lot of other factors may play into the decision as well.

The important thing to note is that the campus must vote to expand before any group can consider colonizing. The ball is in Texas A&M's court.

Indiana University Panhellenic has voted to do a completely deferred recruitment next year, which means 21 party will now occur after Winter Break. So no more month off between 21 and 14 parties. Now the women get about 10 hours off between the two.

I honestly don't think it will "improve" anything. what it will do is completely burn out the women on both sides-- as well as their recruitment advisers
I will give you that it will make numbers appear better- since now women will not even be allowed to start recruitment if they don't make grades. So the starting number will be lower- and therefore the placement rates will appear higher.

Sorry for the thread crash, but FR has hit the nail on the head. I believe that the bad press from the IDS about open house and the bad PR from the PHA Sorority Blog about dismal placement rates prompted this change. I am not sure that the changes are meant to be indicative of any real change, but are merely band aid to fix the PR issues. I am sure FR can add some insight here, too.

Maybe so. It will paint prettier picture of total placement.

Exactly. This is why the changes frustrate me. They aren't meaningful- just PR.

They didn't move 21 party because the sororities wanted it or because it would improve the process, they moved it because of a newspaper article. Now 8 party and Preference are the weekend after school starts. I'm sure people won't like that either.

The fact is as long as IU has bed rush, recruitment rates are going to be tight. It is a competitive recruitment school. Most people in the midwest aren't used to sorority recruitment that is this competitive. We aren't raised with the same recruitment mentality as Ole Miss or Bama or Georgia. So when parents and snowflakes encounter it, they get freaked out. So IU ends up with a bad recruitment reputation that I don't think is completely deserved.

Tell me if I'm wrong but has IU just voted to expand again in the future? Will this be 22 party or 23?

I am pleased to report that Delta Xi at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology had a rather successful Bid Day today! Eight New Members joined us for a fun afternoon of Minute to Win It games and a cookout at our apartment block. Two more lovely young ladies have accepted snap bids this evening, bringing us to a NM class of 10 with a quota of 14. IIRC, this is the highest percentage of quota we've achieved on Bid Day in our chapter's history. If we meet quota, we will also be at our campus total of 45.
