Philantrophy Events!!!!
Hey Guys,
I'm a TKE from IU in Indiana. My house is in the process of setting up some philantrophies for the first time and I was curious if any of you can give me any ideas in the least of some things we can do. We want to try to do some good ones where we can get our name out on campus and community since we are a fairly new house on campus and we are new to it all. Any information provided would be a great deal of help to me.

We have a taco feed at our house every year.
The best philanthropy's I've been to have all had food, or were sports events. If you go the food route, you should have it on Thursday night (assuming that IU is like Nebraska where the weekend adn the drinking begin on Thursday - I know that's not the case everywhere) and it should go until at least 2. That's usually how we handle the events is to get wasted adn then come back to campus and eat. Ideas for food include: Pancakes, buffalo wings (this was a real popular one), tacos, ice cream, hot dogs, sub sandwiches, or something else that wouldn't be too expensive to procure. Donations from local businesses will help. Then just go sell tickets throughout the sorority houses, and dorms in advance and let the people come.
If you decide to run tournament for the sororities make it somethign fun. Here Kappa Kappa Gamma has a soccer tournament, ATO has softball for the sororities, KD has a flag football tournament, APhi has a golf tournament, while Phi Mu has a pitch tournament (poorly attended from what I heard). Other ideas for a sport might be kickball (that's the the gamma phis do at Kansas) Basketball, croquet(???) swimming (although this is similar to DG's Anchor Splash) or volleyball. The best way to do it is to have the sororities make teams (perhaps by pledge class) and then have your guys "coach" the teams. I personally think, that if youre able to get teams set up by year in school, it'd be great to make sure the coaches were the same year. That way you get to meet people. (in the APhi golf, the girls caddy)
There are a couple of other philanthropies that go on here, but I'm not sure exactly how they earn money. Lambda Chi has a trampoline-a-thon, and some one else has a hot tub-a-thon.
good luck

At Arizona State, we have a wide range involving philanthropies: for sororities: We (Sigma Kappa) have a soccer tournament, Kappa Kappa Gamma has a football tourny, APhi has a Basketball Tourney, Theta has a Baseball tourny, AXO and Pi Phi both have Volleyball, and ADPI has a water-gun thing- which is cool.
*** We are all kind of bummed because skit nights got pulled from all philanthropies this year- for 'lewd and inappropriate' behavior.
Fraternities philanthropies are as follows: Phi Psi has a Relay, Sigma Nu has Swimming Relays & Volleyball, Theta Chi is now doing Softball, Kappa Sig has Flag Football, Pike-Volleyball, Lambda Chi- well the Watermelon Relays.
*** The idea- is the more fun- and interesting- the better. More fun than competitive is the key.

Before our philantropy weekend we present it to all of the fraternities and then if they decide that they want to participate they donate 100 dollars and then they do.
I really enjoyed our philanthropy this year. The first day all of our girls wore shirts that said I spy an ADPI and had a target on the back. The 11 participating fraternities were allowed to get us wet any way they wanted to during the day. A lot of our girls were thrown in the fountain by our memorial union and TEKE went a little crazy with a bucket. Then that Saturday after bringing breakfast to our boys we had a day of mattress races, slip and slide contests, and finished up with a game of capture the flag. It was a really fun day and everything worked out as planned. (Phi Sig took home first place, AEPI second, and Theta Chi came in third.)
