Recommendation Question

Hi Ladies!

I'm going through informal recruitment this upcoming year at a small school in NJ, and I haven't heard anything about recs except on this site, and after searching on here, and via google, don't see anything about needing recs for my school specifically. However, I saw a post from a girl in, lets say, EFG that says her house requires recs, and that house is on my campus, though I know by her user name that she also goes to a huge school in the south.

Should I still try to get recs? If so, what is the most appropriate way of contacting alumnae chapters, without being rude? I have asked around and know only one Greek that is able to help me out. My town is not Greek at all, and I've asked every Greek I know if they are able to put me in contact with anyone in the houses on my campus (as I've said, I'm okay with one house, but I'd still need the other 3!) I'd be ENTIRELY willing to meet up with an alum to give her my resume and all and let her get to know me prior to deciding if she was willing to write me a rec (even if it is just an informational one!)

Thanks for any help!

If EFG has a national policy that requires recs for a woman to be pledged, the chapter will find a rec for you.

It varies by campus. If your school has never heard of a rec, then don't worry. Some chapters require recs, however, at smaller schools, like yours it sounds like, they will secure one for you if needed.

You could still try. However, I think it may be best to ask someone who is familiar with the school. If someone you know (or someone on here if you feel comfortable with giving that information) is or was in a chapter on your campus, ask her. There are some places where giving a rec is completely unheard of and would be odd. Is the woman you already contacted from familiar with your campus?

If you can get a rec, great. If not, no big deal.

In my almost 15 years as a member my collegiate chapter's received maybe 2 recs in total. Each time one came in was a big shock because we're one of those campuses where recs are practically unheard of.

You'll see lots of discussions here about recommendations but please understand that super competitive recruitment at Big State U. is nothing like what you'll likely go through at small school in NJ.

She's a recent grad of a school close by, that's honestly the BEST I could do without contacting an Alumnae Chapter, which I didn't want to do if it wasn't necessary so as not to bother the women. I also went onto the Alumnae Chapter's website to see if I knew any or even vaguely recognized a face or name and didn't. If it would be odd, do you think it would be looked upon negatively rather than as an asset? I'm acquaintances with a good handful of girls in 3/4 houses, so maybe I should forego the recs?

Oh, Thank you! Sorry, I'm the only one of my family/friends interested in Greek life so it's a big learning process!

Since you know women in the chapters currently, ask them if you need recs! Or call the Greek Life office on your campus. And then ask EVERYONE you know who went to college (this includes teachers,e tc because we know they went to college) if they were Greek or know anyone who was. NETWORK!
