Lightbulb recruitment ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas for recruitment that works really well for your chapter? Also, if you are from the SIU or WIU chapter, please write back! I would love to work with you in recruiting new members for Illinois schools!

Ever since I've been in Sigma Alpha we've pretty much followed the same kind of schedule of events. I have to say that this past year's rush chair did an awesome job and added some really great events to our schedule. We brought in some really great girls both semesters. We usually will go out to intro ag classes the first or second week of school and let all the girls know the dates for our rush functions. We also will post flyers around campus especially in areas that we know ag students frequent. Something we tried this year was passing out information in front of our student union to girls that walked past. Another new idea we tried this year was sending out an email inviting all of the women in the college of ag to come to our first rush event. From what I was told we got a number of girls by doing this. You might check with someone in your college of ag about doing this.

When it comes to actual events we usually have about 4 nights of actual events. The first event is our info night. All of the actives dress up nice (we wore nice black pants and solid color button down shirts this past semester) and we let the rushees know a little bit about us. We usually do a cute skit and then the rush chair and several other sisters talk about Sigma Alpha. Then we have Mingle Night. It was held at a sister's apt. This year we had a Hawaiian theme for our rush so we all dressed up in hula skirts, wore leis, and played Hawaiian music. Mingle Night is basically where you "mingle" with the rushees. We actually paired two or three actives up to each rushee. Then they took about 10 or 15 minutes to learn things about each other and then told the rest of the girls what they had learned about each other. We then played silly games and had a great time. The next event was our Dinner Date. We all went to a restaurant with a really fun atmosphere and just had a good time. Unfortunately this fall our Dinner Date fell on Sept. 11 so no one was very interested in having too much fun but we still ended up having a good time. The final event is Formal Questions. That's where each rushee sits down with the executive committee and they ask her questions. Then the entire chapter votes on each girl.

Since I'm getting longwinded I'll go ahead and wrap this up. I hope what I've said helps a little bit.

Sisters,
Allison

Another thing I forgot to add....You may want to check out the rush forum on this board if you haven't already. They mainly talk about formal NPC rush but there are a few informal rush threads with some really cute ideas in them.

Also, if you've not already found these, your chapter has a list of recruitment and rush ideas in the National Chapter Guidebook. These were supplied by chapters and there are some neat suggestions!

Great idea about recruiting for Illinois chapters as a group. I know that the Texas chapters got together and had a booth at their state FFA convention last year, maybe some of them can share how that went.

The Omega chapter is having rush in the end of January so it was very beneficial to read Allison's repy. In addition, the Omega chapter plans 2 info nights the week prior to rush. Here we will be dressed professionally and each member will talk a little about Sigma Alpha, our scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood activities. Also, we are planning to host an 80's night pizza and bowling party with a the sigma phi delta fraternity. Also for rush week, we are planning a scavenger hunt, ice skating, and Mary Kay parties in the dorms. Hopefully, this rush is very successful for us. We will let you know how it went!

Here may be another idea for recriutment:

I was reading a reply by Beth Fulton to another question posted on greekchat and she suggested to display your charter and any awards recieved by your chapter.
I don't know if your chapter already does that but I thought that is an excellent idea. It shows your success as a chapter and is very impressive!

Just wanted to say hi! I'm glad to see your chapter doing so well. I think it is totally cool that you guys were the only non-NPC group that did our philanthropy last year. PM me if you want some recruitment info, because I happen to know quite a bit about the U of I system and how different non-NPC chapters rush.
